LAWHEAD TO LEAD SINGERS

Dr. Collus LAWHEAD, local dentist, will direct the Ringgold Singers and choral club members this year as they prepare for a spring concert.

Dr. LAWHEAD has participiated in many vocal and instrumental music activities during his years at Mount Ayr Community high school where he graduated in 1966 and at the University of Iowa, Iowa City. Among the special vocal accomplishments involving Dr. LAWHEAD were the singing of the lead in the high school presentation of Carousel and singing with the Old Gold Singers at Iowa University.

Accompanying the group will be Mike GREENE, assistant manager at Anthony's. Both are new in these capacities.

The Ringgold Singers and Choral Club will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10 in the Mount Ayr public library basement to begin rehearsal for the concert.

Ringgold Singers Concert to be May 11

It's spring and that means concert time for the Ringgold Singers. This year on Friday, May 11, in the Mount Ayr Community high school gym, the curtain will go up at 8 p.m. on "Love is Sweeping the Country."

The 39-voice group of talented local singers are directed by Kathleen HAROVER. Accompanist at the piano is Mike GREENE and guitarist is Linda HARTMAN. The program will be presented in five sections each featuring different moods of music.

During the "Gershwin and Porter on love" portion, Jayne GROSS, Susan GREENE, Linda SMITH and Karen WEEDA will appear as soloists.

In the second section there will be a duet by Dick and Camille JACKSON, a solo by Linda SMITH, a trio by Athena STRANGE, Edna JONES and Neva FISHER, and a solo by Grace BRADLEY. A trio composed of Kay OSHEL, Janet HICKMAN and Freda HOWE will highlight the third group of members.

A duet of mother and daughter, Faith SHINKLE and Carol Ann McCREARY, "Side by Side"; a solo by Karen WEEDA; a quartet of Duane PINE, Dick JACKSON, Jim McCREARY and Bill HAROVER and a duet by Judy CUNNING and Collus LAWHEAD of "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" are part of the fourth segment.

Doris KLEJCH and Bill HAROVER have solos during the final portion of the program.

The 17 sopranos included are: Carol BAKER, Lesa COUTS, Doris KLEJCH, Mary McCREARY, Betty MONAGHAN, Kay OSHEL, Colleen REYNOLDS, Sheila SHAFER, Linda SMITH, Athena STRANGE, Cheryl TAYLOR, Helen TERRY, Judy CUNNING and Janet HICKMAN.

Altos are: Grace BRADLEY, Neva FISHER, Nancy GODWIN, Susan GREENE, Jayne GROSS, Freda HOWE, Camille JACKSON, Edna JONES, Luann LARSON, Carol McCREARY and Faith SHINKLE.

The four tenors include: Dick JACKSON, Collus LAWHEAD, Duane PINE and Karen WEEDA, and basses are Ken BURRIGHT, Bill HAROVER, Alan IBBOTSON, Jim McCREARY, Mike SICKELS, Kenneth SMITH and Rod ZOLLMAN.

Ringgold Singers is a local group of men and women who enjoy singing and hae formed a group which meets each month. Many of the meetings have been devoted to rehersing for the annual concert staged each spring.

This year's officers are co-chairman: Camille and Dick JACKSON of Kellerton; vice-president, Duane PINE of Diagonal; and secretary-treasurer, Helen TERRY of Mount Ayr.

Ticket salesmena nd ushers for this year's concert are Deanna WARIN, Ann CLARK, Beth MILBY and Marilyn SAVILLE.

The group is most appreciative of the Mount Ayr Community school for allowing them to use facilities particularly to Merrill PERRY for the use of the band room for rehearsals and use of band equipment and to Bill HOHLFELD and the light crew for their help with this year's production.

Ringgold Singers sing

 

The annual concert of the Ringgold Singers, the community chorus made up of people from Ringgold and surrounding counties, was presented Friday to a large crowd. "Just For Fun" was the theme for the concert this year, which featured pop tunes, religious music and patriotic numbers.

Seth FARROW directed the chorus and Sherri HYMBAUGH was accompanist.

Ringgold Singers welcome holiday season

A busy day of activity in Mount Ayr Saturday was led off with a concert and soup supper sponsored by the Ringgold Singers, the county area chorus. Carols were sung with the audience as well as group numbers and solos as part of the annual concert.

Andrew DAVIS directed the chorus and Sherri HYMBAUGH was accompanist for the concert held in the United Methodist Church in Mount Ayr.

Ringgold Singers

A special afternoon and evening of Christmas fun is planned in Mount Ayr Saturday.

Ringgold Singers will be performing at 3:30 p.m. at the Mount Ayr United Methodist church before the Window Walk on Saturday.

Following the concert will be a soup supper serving chili and vegetable soup.

The community choir will "Git R Done in Ringgold County" with a variety of holiday tunes including "Winter Wonderland," "Slow Rockin' Christmas," "I'll Be Home For Christmas," "We Need A Little Christmas," "We Three Kings," "He Is Born," "Happy Holidays/White Christmas" and solos and small group performances. Camille JACKSON is directing the chorus this year.

Proceeds from the concert and supper this year will go to scholarships. There will also be a box for donations of non-perishable items to be given to the Ringgold County Neighborhood Center food pantry.

A table will also set up with raffle tickets being sold to help the two Mount Ayr Community high school students who are planning to take the Iowa Ambassadors of Music trip to Europe in July.

"With the music and audience participation, we hope to send people away from the concert with Christmas in their hearts," said Vicki ZOLLMAN, Ringgold Singers president.

Ringgold Singers concert May 5

The annual spring concert by the Ringgold Singers is planned for Friday, May 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the Mount Ayr Community high school auditorium.

"Name Entertainment" is the theme for the concert, which will feature music that has names of people in the title.

Songs with names in them like, Joshua, Michael, Elijah, Annie Laurie, Danny, Eliza, Jimmy, Dolly, Peter and Elvira will be sung by the chorus. There are separate songs by men's and women's groups, special numbers and a few surprises throughout the night.

Camille JACKSON is directing the chorus this year and Sherri HYMBAUGH is accompanist.

Tickets are on sale from group members or at the door.

Cobbler's Christmas shared in production

More than 50 area residents took part in the Moonlighter Theatre Group and Ringgold Singers production of "Christmas at the Cobbler's Shop," the Christmas show presented Friday and Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Mount Ayr. Bad weather [massive ice storm] cancelled the final performance Saturday night.

A choir of Mount Ayr elementary school children and Ringgold Singers members provided music throught the production of the play Friday and Saturday.

Cast for the production, directed by Marilyn Hawkins, include:

Muscial numbers included piano duets of "The Hallelujah Chorus" and "Angels We Have Heard on High" with "Hark the Herald Angels" by Sherri Hymbaugh and Nancy Sackett. Carol Cason provided a flute solo with some of the numbers.

Radio theme for Ringgold Singers
concert Friday night at MACHS

  The annual Ringgold Singers spring concert will be held Friday, May 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the Mount Ayr Community high school auditorium.

The group of singers from around Ringgold and surrounding counties will have a theme of "Turning in the Radio" for the program this year.

An old radio show will be playing in the half hour before the show begins and then everything from religious broadcasting to love songs, from rock and roll to advertising, from sports to news and weather will be celebrated in the program.

The program, like the broadcast day on many radio stations, will close with the singing of the National Anthem.

Songs by the large group and music from small groups will be featured in the program this year.

Large group numbers will feature "Turn Your Radio On," "Celtic Laud," "Back to the 50's," "At Last," "Sir Duke," "Baseball Fever," "Singin' in the Rain," and "Listen to the Music." Carol CASON will be featured on the flute on "Celtic Laud" and Alan IBBOTSN and Larry WHITE have solos on "Turn Your Radio On."

The men's chorus will sing "Thank God I'm A Country Boy" with fiddle solo by Kristy GILLILAND. The women's chorus will sing "Harbor Lights."

Jim McCREARY, Carol McCREARY, Kathy SHIELDS and Barbie BELZER will sing "I Heard It On the Radio." Jim NORMAN and Larry WHITE will sing "Bye Bye Love." Jodi LAWRENCE will sing "Coal Miner's Daughter."

Kathleen MYERS and Larry WHITE will sing "Did You Ever Go Sailing?" Jim and Carol McCREARY and Dick and Camille JACKSON will sing "When I'm 64." Dick JACKSON will sing "The Billboard Song," and Collus LAWHEAD will sing "Here's That Rainy Day."

Charles WEIMAN will be the radio preacher and the baseball classic "Who's On First?" will be shared.

Several couples will be dancing during the numbers including Raymond and Donna SHIELDS, Jay and Pat MEESTER,and Donna SHIELDS, Amy TEUTSCH and Pat MEESTER.

Barb HUTTON will be the narrator for the evening and several others will play parts listening to the radio including Beulah HUTCHISON, Lew KNAPP, Raymond SHIELDS and the BELZER children and Jordan CRAWFORD will also participate.

Ringgold Singers Rehearse 60's Party

"60's Beach Party" is the theme for Ringgold Singers' spring entertainment planned for May 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the American Legion building in Mount Ayr. Folks attending will be treated to a picnic supper as well as songs and other fun surprises. The cost for the evening of fun will be $7 with $1 refunded at the door for everyone who wears Hawaiian type shirts and dresses for the event.

60's songs featured will include Bandstand Boogy, Blue Velvet, Love Potion #9, Walk Like a Man, 60s Party Line, She's Got You, Release Me, A Summer Song, Itsy Bitsy Yellow Polka Dot Bikini, Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer, Best of the Beach Boys, Wipe Out, Tiny Bubbles, Blue Hawaii and What a Wonderful World.

Ringgold Singers to present at beach party!


Tickets now on sale for Friday night performance

1960's beach party theme and a picnic dinner to go along with it will be offered by the Ringgold Singers in their annual spring concert Friday, May 10. The concert hot dog picnic supper will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the program to follow 7 p.m. at the Mount Ayr American Legion building. Admission is $7 with $1 refunded at the door for those wearing Hawaiian, beach or 1960s attire.

As well as songs by the Ringgold Singers as a whole, there will be many small groups and some audience participation blowing bubbles to "Tiny Bubbles," doing the limbo to "Limbo Rock" or singing "Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer."

Camille Jackson is again directing the group this year and there will be an accompaniment by Sheri Hymbaugh, Nancy Sackett and Carolyn Houts on piano, Jim George on guitar, Dennis Hemann on bass and Darren Jones on drums.

The entire Ringgold Singers chorus will sing "Bandstand Boogie," "Blue Velvet," "Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer," "Best of the Beach Boys" and "What AWonderful World."

The men will sing "Walk Like A Man" and "Love Potion #9" while the women will sing "1960s Party Line," featuring such favorites as "It's My Party," "Chapel of Love," "Lollypop" and "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'."

A small group of the women will do "Itsy Bitsy Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" and other small group or solo numbers will include "Release Me," "She Has You," "Little Old Lady from Pasadena," "Peppermint Twist," Chad and Jeremy's "A Summer Song," "Marianne," and "Tiny Bubbles."

Instrumental numbers will feature Sammy Crawford on trumpet for "I Left My Heart In San Francisco" and the band for "Limbo Rock" and "Wipe Out."

"We invite young and old to come and share in the music and the fun," Jackson invited.

Members of the Ringgold Singers this year include:

Sopranos: Sue Beck, Judy Cunning, Janet Hickman, Kathleen Myers, Selina O'Connor, Linda Phipps, Lynda Rolfe and Vicki Zollman.

Altos: Carolyn Houts, Jodi Lawrence, Pat Meester and Shannon Weiman.

Tenors: Dick Jackson, Chuck Weiman, Jim Hullinger, Jay Meester and Larry White.

Basses: Rob Rolfe, Mark Hickman, Rod Zollman, Jim Norman and Alan Smith.

A number of other people will also be helping out with the program for the night including a group of youngsters helping with the 60s Party Line number.

  It has been a busy holiday season in Ringgold County. One of the many features of the lighted parade was a performance by the Ringgold Singers in the courthouse following the parade.

Ringgold Singers to hit the stage this weekend

Ringgold Singers bring country music and humor to the Princess Theater stage this weekend as they present Hay Haw Hapnin'. Performances are scheduled on Saturday, April 12 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 13 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are now on sale for $5 at the Record-News and the Princes or can be purchased at the time of the performances. Theater goers are encouraged to wear their best bibs or country attire (just not hats, please) and enjoy the 'corn' sprouting up among songs.

Sons of Thunder will treat audience members to some fiddlin' as they open this year's show and do accompaniment for Old Dan Tucker.

Chorus numbers incluce Rocky Top, John Cash Medley, Shenandoah, Oh My My, Old Dan Tucker, and Leave The Dishes in The Sink. Men sing Hey Good Lookin', Gloom Despair, and Mountain Dew. The ladies enterain with I Fall to Pieces and The Gossip Song.

Solos or duets of Sweet Violets, Crazy, You Met Another Three Wooden Crosses, Through the Eyes of My Father, Paper Roses and The Auctioneer Song, as well as a featured fairy tale and mystery guests will round out the evening.

This year's Ringgold Singers are:

Sopranos - Sue BECK, Marla CRAWFORD, Janet HICKMAN, Selina O'CONNOR, Linda PHIPPS, Lynda ROLFE, Kathleen WHITE and Vicki ZOLLMAN.

Ringgold Singers to present annual spring concert May 2-3

Ringgold Singers will "Say It With Music" at their annual spring concert Saturday, May 2, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 3 at 2:30 p.m. in the Princess Theater. Tickets are $5 and go on sale next week at the Princess.

Featured show tunes and songs by Irving Berlin will include "Alexander's Ragtime Band," "Play for Me a Simple Melody," "Puttin' on the Ritz," "Steppin' Out With My Baby," "Happy Holiday/White Christmas," "Blue Skies," "I Got the Sun in the Morning and the Moon at Night," "God Bless America" and "This is a Great Country."

Audience members who would like to participate in the show are encouraged to bring a favorite hat to wear for "Easter Parade" and/or a small American flag to wave.

Accompanists Carolyn Houts and Nancy Sackett will be featured with a duet in "I Love a Piano." Other small group and solo numbers include "Always," "You'd Be Surprised," "You're Just in Love/I Hear Music," "What'll I Do," "A Couple of Swells," "There's No Business Like Show Business," "You Can't Get a Man with a Gun" and "Anything You Can Do."

Singers to begin season

Ringgold Singers begin their 2016 season tonight (Thursday, February 4) at 7:30 p.m. with their first weekly practice at the Restoration Branch.

This year's music will feature the songs of Frank Sinatra, whose music crossed the decades from World War II to the 1990s.

They would love to have new members come to join in singing a few of the over 1,300 songs that "old blue eyes" recorded.

Sunday, May 22  Ringgold Singers present their annual spring performance "Favorites by Frank," featuring a few of their favorite songs recorded by Frank Sinatra at the Princess Theatre in Mount Ayr on Saturday, May 21 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 22 at 2:30 p.m.

"Frank's way" gave a unique spin to every tune he sang.

The listing is a mere "drop in the bucket" compared to the nearly 1,400 songs he recorded during his career, which spanned over 50 years. The selections promise well-remembered songs by Sinatra and other melodies you may be hearing for the first time.

Ticket price is $5 and tickets are available at the Mount Ayr Record-News office and at the door.

Ringgold Singers to host brunch May 13

The Ringgold Singers are hosting a mother, daughter, and friends brunch on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at 9 a.m. at the First Christian Church (on the square).

A free will offering with many door pries and a raffle will be part of the festivities.

The menu will consist of breakfast casseroles, coffee cakes, breads and muffins as well as coffee and orange juice.

The 15 minute entertainment by the Ringgold Singers includes "Back to the Fifties," "Que Sera Sera," and "Tribute to the Everly Brothers." Carol Ann McCreary will be singing the solo "Mother."

You don't have to be a mother or daughter to attend.
