JOHN WARD FAMILY

John Francis and Kathryn CONWELL WARD, who farmed east of Maloy were of Irish descent. Parents of both were from County Donegal, Ireland, but the two families did not know each other while in Ireland!

Kathryn's (Kit) parents were Julia DAUGHTON and Edward CONWELL. They had twelve children - all born north of Grand River, Iowa. John's (Johnny) parents were Mary ASKRIN and Patrick WARD. They had 10 children and farmed near Beaconsfield. The parents of both Kit and Johnny are buried in the Maloy Catholic [St. Mary's] cemetery.

Patrick WARD was born in March of 1846 in County Donegal, Ireland. He arrived in America in 1865, and married Mary ASKIN in 1866 in Illinois. Mary ASKIN was born in County Donegal, Ireland on March 4 1846, and died at the age of 62 years on April 15, 1908. Patrick died on April 9, 1924.

Kit and Johnny had four children - Mary Margaret, John Joseph, Anna and Monica (Mike), all born near Beaconsfield. They moved to Maloy and farmed from about 1920 to 1943. They also ran the general store and restaurant in Maloy from approximately 1926 to 1930. They were open six days a week, but never on Sundays! Kit was in charge of the restaurant and fed the school teachers and railroad men.

Those were poor times, and after they sold the store and returned to farming, they eventually lost their farm during the depression. They continued to rent the same place, however. Later, around 1939, they moved to Diagonal, bought a farm and lived there until they moved to San Diego [CA] in 1943.

Kathryn died on her birthday, April 10, 1948 at age 67, and Johnny died in 1951 at age 74. They are both buried in San Diego.

Their children include Mary Margaret, born November 26, 1916, who graduated from Maloy High School in 1934 and attended college in Sioux City and Iowa City. She taught country school in this area. She and her husband, Dr. Jerome JUSTEN, and three sons, Patrick, James and John, lived in Europe for two years, in Momence, Illinois and Santa Maria, California. Mary died in 1980 and is buried at Santa Maria.

Anna (Ann) was born September 18, 1919 and graduated from Maloy in 1936 in a class of two! She played basketball, traveling around the U.S. while attending A.I.C., a business school in Davenport. She and her husband, Robert (Bob), have five children, Tom, Kathleen (Kate), Jane, Virignia (Gin) and Patricia. They lived in Walcott, Iowa where Bob was in the farm implement business until 1960 when they moved to Pamona, California. They now [1987] live in Upland, California.

Some family trivia: Bob was playing at the State Basketball Tournament on Davenport High's team at the same time Maloy went to the State Tourney during the 1936-37 school year. They didn't win either! Ann and her sister, Monica, rented the same furnished apartment in Davenport, Iowa where President Ronald REAGAN had lived when he was a radio announcer as Dutch REAGAN at WOC.

Monica (Mike) was born July 14, 1921 and graduated from Maloy in 1937. She was [the] National Free Throw champion while playing basketball for A.I.C. She was inducted into the Iowa Basketball Hall of Fame in 1969 as she was the third girl from Iowa to be named as National All-American. She moved to California in 1943. She and her husband Jack HADDOCK, had four children, Jane, Michael, Ann and Susan, and lived in San Diego and Pomona, California. She is now married to Perry BADGLEY and they live in Carson City, Nevada.

Anna WARD WINTER adds, "We all remember the wonderful people and the good times we had growing up around Maloy -- the softball games in the summers, playing basketball in the school gym (open even on weekends), the torture of Frank CARR'S kidding when the teachers sent us to get their mail, riding the school bus, church and school activities, etc. I'm so glad there is still the same Maloy spirit!"

John Joseph, born July 4, 1918, graduated from Maloy High School in 1935, attended college [Northwest Missouri State University] in Maryville, Missouri, and then moved to Texas and later to California. He served inthe army and met his wife, Jeannie, in Alaska. They have six children: John, Jim, Tom, Pamela and Patricia (twins), and Terry. They have lived most of their lives in California and have a home at Poway, California. John has worked for General Dynamics for over 45 years.

NOTES: Mary Margaret (WARD) JUSTEN was born in 1916, and died April 2, 1980. Dr. Jerome William "Jerry" JUSTEN, son of Juliet and Bernard JUSTEN, was born June 10, 1918 in McHenry, Illinois, and died April 17, 2011, Santa Maria, California. They were interred at Santa Maria Cemetery.

Anne (HADDOCK) MILLER was born in San Diego, California on May 8, 1950, and died at the age of 55 years on July 20, 2005.
