Benton Centennial
1887 - Benton, Iowa - 1987

The Waugh Family

Denzil and Socarro WAUGH became Benton business and home-owners when DBM Electronics, a two-way radio and television service comapny, was relocated from Grant City, Missouri, to the I.O.O.F. building. Denzil and Socarro moved from their ancestral farm near Redding in the summer of 1985, to the Jessie GUNTER property in northwest Benton, Iowa.

Socarro is a native of Mexico, who came to the United States in 1950, applied for and received citizenship, and married in 1956. She has worked at the Ringgold County Hospital as a registered nurse since 1958.

Denzil is a certified electronic technician. He is the son of Clyde and Clara WAUGH; the grandson of J.H. (Uncle Joe) and Minnie McQUIGG WAUGH; and the great-grandson of Harvey and Nancy WAUGH, early settlers (1854) in Middle Fork Township, Iowa, and postmaster of Clipper, near the Missouri border, southwest of the Middle Fork Church.

Eugene Mark entered the home by adoption in 1959, at the age of three days. Eugene married Julie ELLIS in 1984. He has a step-daughter, Tracy, and a daughter, Dana Beth, born in 1985.

Martha Ann, likewise, became a family member by adoption in 1962, at the age of four days. She married Brent RICKER in 1985.

G. FINDLEY has made his home with the family since 1959.

brothers and two sisters, to Ethel and Melvin WALLACE, rural Creston. He graduated from Diagonal High School in 1968, and went into the Army in 1969. While he was stationed in Germany, he met his wife-to-be, Shirley Ann MADGYESI of Kalamazoo, Michigan, who was already stationed there. Shirley, the daughter of Charles and Donna MADGYESI, graduated from Gobles High School (Michigan) in 1967.

Wendell and Shirley were married in June of 1971. Their first child, Wendy Diane, was born in March of 1972. The family moved from Diagonal to rural Benton in May of 1972. Their second daughter, Heather Mae, was born June of 1975. Their son, Michael Melvin, was born in April of 1983.

Attending Northwest Missouri State University, Shirley recevied a B.S. in Art Education in 1978. She is presently teaching kindergarten through twelfth grade at Grant City, Missouri. Wendell currently is working for Surgro Plant Food Company, Diagonal.

NOTE: Denzil WAUGH, born November 26, 1921 at Redding, Iowa, served in the U.S. Army Air Corps (1844-1945) during World War II, and married Socorro PULIDO on June 16, 1956 in Des Moines. He died suddenly on January 12, 2007, and was interred at Hickory Grove Cemetery.
