Maxine Groves
Maxine GROVES is the older daughter of Carl and Iona STACY GROVES. She grew up on the farm southwest of Benton. She attended
Benton School and graduated with the class of 1948. Also in the class was LeRoy BUCY, Jr., son of LeRoy and Anna BUCY,
whom she married on January 26, 1951. Maxine was a rural school teacher in Lincoln Township and LeRoy worked on the farms
of Clarence BARKER and Chester WALLACE. LeRoy was inducted into the Army in November 1951, and spent one year in Korea.
During this time, Maxine was teaching the third, fourth, and fifth grades in the Benton school. Following LeRoy's discharge
from the Army in August, 1953, they began farming on the Mildred DOLECHECK HAYES farm, northwest of Benton. Their three
children: Patricia, Jean, and Richard, were born while they lived there.
in January of 1958, and then to his parents' farm south of Benton in 1959. LeRoy also operated the Benton Service Station
from 1963 until November of 1966, when they moved to Creston where he has since been employed by Hills McCanna, later
known as Wellman Dynamics. Maxine taught school for six years in the Clarke Community Elementary School, where she was
the remedial math teacher. Since then she has been employed by Berning Cafe in Creston. They have six grandchildren:
Jamey Jo and Michael BARNES of Atlantic, Iowa; Buddy and Erika Leigh BUCY of Ankeny, Iowa; and Brandon and Tiara Jean
DOWNEY of Salt Lake City, Utah.
