Benton Centennial 1887 - Benton, Iowa - 1987
The Lyle Swank, Jr. Family
Mary WHITE was the third child of Howard and Wilma BEKERINK WHITE. Mary attended school in Greenfield
by a Bentonite, Joe BOWEN, who was also going to college at Maryville. On September 15, 1963, Lyle, Jr. and Mary were
married in Greenfield. Lyle, Jr. and Mary lived in Mount Ayr for five years, and in October of 1969, they purchased the
Dr. LANDIS property, owned then by Cora CORMAN, and moved to Benton. Junior's jobs have included: working for Bastow's
Feed and Grain; being self-employed; and working as a tractor mechanic for John Deere, Allis-Chalmers, International,
and Case. When ELLIOTT Service Center, located near Benton, hired a mechanic, Junior worked for them until its closing in
1984. Junior now works for Case Power and Equipment in Mount Ayr as a tractor mechanic. Opening a gargae is Junior's plan
for the future. Mary has worked as an Avon representative; teacher's aide and teacher for the Head Start Program in
Mount Ayr and Bedford; and finally, as a bookkeeper for Warin Oil Company in Maloy. Mary is also involved in politics,
as she is the clerk-treasurer for the town of Benton.
