Benton Centennial
1887 - Benton, Iowa - 1987

Donald and Lela Campbell

Donald (Bud) CAMPBELL, son of Oliver and Clara CAMPBELL [was born on September 9, 1905]. Bud married [1927] Lela [Florence] VAUGHN, daughter of Dora VAUGHN and Susie HUTCHISON VAUGHN of Benton, Iowa. They were blessed with three boys: Lloyd, Gerold, and Duane. Their early years were spent in Benton, Iowa. They ran the Jack Sprat food store, and Bud (as Donald was fondly called) was also a salesman for General Foods. They lived in various houses in town and on the farm, retiring on a farm near town. They enjoyed gardening and all of Benton enjoyed their bountiful crop.

Lela served as treasurer and secretary on the town council for many years and gave many hours to her community doing everything she felt needed done. She was an avid quilter and made many Benton baby quilts. She spent many hours on the old Methodist church, helping to fix and clean it after it was given to the town to be restored.

Both Bud and Lela are deceased. [Bud died on June 24, 1970; Lela was born on October 18, 1905 and died on July 2, 1981. They were interred at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr.]

The first son of Bud and Lela, Lloyd CAMPBELL, married Bonnie DOBY, from Parkridge, Illinois. They have three children: Patrick, at home; Rick, of Tampa, Florida; and Karen, of Orlando, Florida. They have two grandchildren, Lloyd and Bonnie, who live in Orlando, Florida, where their father is in real estate.

The second [son] of Bud and Lela, Gerald CAMPBELL, married Lena RILEY from Cooperton, Oklahoma, and they live in Woodbridge, Virginia. They have two children. Debbie CAMPBELL is an accountant and lives in Rossalyn, Virginia. Mark CAMPBELL is in college at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma, and lives in Woodbridge, Virginia, where Gerald owns a furniture store.

The third son of Bud and Lela, Duane CAMPBELL, married Carol Low HIGDAY (sic, should be Caryll Lou) and they had two boys: Timmy, who is deceased; and Dannie and wife, Kim, who live in Des Moines, Iowa. Duane was killed in a car-train accident at an early age.

NOTE: Leland "Lloyd" CAMPBELL was born on September 5, 1927, and died in Florida on December 14, 1987. Frances Yvonne "Bonnie" (DOBEY) CAMPBELL was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on October 17, 1928, and died at Kissimmee, Florida on May 27, 2009. Bonnie worked at Walt Disney World. Patrick Lloyd CAMPBELL was born in Creston, Iowa on July 13, 1951. He was employed at Walt Disney World until his death on May 15, 2006.They were interred at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Gotha, Florida.

Ronald Duane "Mose" CAMPBELL was born in Benton on September 6, 1935, and died in West Des Moines, Iowa on September 6, 1963. Timmy Lynn CAMPBELL was born on September 27, 1962, and died on May 13, 1973. Caryll Lou (HIGDAY) CAMPBELL, daughter of Caroll Linden and Jennie June (MACKEY) HIGDAY, was born in Kellerton, Iowa on April 26, 1936, and died on August 21, 2006. They were interred at Maple Row Cemetery, Kellerton, Iowa.
