TALES from the FRONT PORCH

Ringgold County's Oral Legend & Memories Project

DISCUSSION WITH DORIS MAGGARD, MARCH of 1993

NELLIE MAGGARD'S 87th BIRTHDAY
October 13, 1966
Standing, Left to Right: Vera, Cliff's wife; Roy, Lulu; Cliff;
Mary; Ada, Norval's wife; Loren and Doris, Loren's wife

Doris MAGGARD is the wife of Loren "Short" MAGGARD, son of Nellie (BEAR) MAGGARD. Nellie is the daughter of Solomon "Sol" and Amanda BEAR, and a sister of William Franklin BEAR.

Doris stated the following to me during this discussion:

Nellie BEAR told her she could remember Indians camping on the old BEAR homeplace in the fall. Apparetly they were heading south for the winter.

Dollie (BEAR) MAGGARD, daughter of Sol and Amanda, and Otis MAGGARD lived on Highway #2 east of Mount Ayr onthe north side of the road in the house by the railroad track. There is a brown house there today.

The first house on the east side of the road north of the Lesanville corner is where Lance MAGGARD and Nellie BEAR lived when they were first married.

Doris and Loren lived with Nellie and Lance on the farm north of the old BEAR homeplace when they were first married.

Nellie did not want to talk about whether Amanda had Indian relatives in her background. Agnes BEAR GILES, sister of Nellie, indicated that Amanda does have such relatives.
