John WADHAM, was a colonist from England, said to have come from Somerset. He settled in Connecticut. John WADHAM died December 19, 1676. He was married to Susannah (?).

John WADHAM, Jr., son of John and Susannah WADHAM, was born in Wethersfield, Connecticut on July 8, 1655, and died June 20, 1718, Wethersfield. He was married first to Hannah BIDWELL on December 20, 1677. Hannah, the daughter of John and Sarah (WILCOX) BIDWELL of Wethersfield, was born circa 1658, and died at the age of thirty-eight years on June 17, 1696.

Hannah's father, John BIDWELL, was "a proprietor by courtesy of the town" in 1640. He owned a tan yard and before 1669 had built a saw mill. He was chosen chimney viewer 1655-1661; was freed from watching, warding and training in 1670. Both he and his wife Sarah, the daughter of John WILCOX, were original members of the Second or South Church. John BIDWELL died on June 4, 1687. From Memorial History of Hartford County, Conn.

Hannah's maternal grandfather, John WILCOX, came from Leicestershire, England, to Hartford, Connecticut, about 1636. He was chosen Surveyor of Highways 1643-1644; was made first Selectman in 1645; and townsman in 1650. He died October 14, 1651. Ibid.

The names of both John BIDWELL and John WILCOX are on the Central Monument in Hartford, Connecticut.

John WADHAM, Jr., married second, 13 April, 1697, Abigail, the daughter of John BALDWIN, Sr., of Milford, Connecticut., and granddaughter of Obadiah BREUN of New London, Connecticut. She was born in Milford, Connecticut, on November 15, 1658; and baptized in New Haven, Connecticut, on March 27, 1659. She was married first to Samuel BALDWIN, the son of Nathaniel BALDWIN, and they "settled in Guilford in 1675, where he died January 12, 1696, leaving his wife Abigail and six children." John WADHAM, son of John and Hannah (BIDWELL) WADHAM, was born January 28, 1684, in Wethersfield, Connecticut, and died in Glastonbury, Connecticut in 1742. John married on April 2, 1719, Charity DICKINSON, born April 1, 1699, the daughter of Thomas and Mary (LOVELAND) DICKINSON of Glastonbury.

The WADHAMS settled in Wethersfield and received from his father in 1711 one-half of the homestead on the west side of the highway (in Egypt); and five years later (in 1716) he secured the remaining half by purchase. John, like his father, was a weaver. In 1721 he sold a house and seven or eight acres of land in Wethersfield to Captain Jonathan ROBBONS, and about 1725 he removed to Glastonbury where his name is frequently found on the records from 1731 to 1740. He probably lived at Eastbury.

John WADHAMS, son of John and Charity (DICKINSON) WADHAM, was born April 25, 1726, at Glastonbury, Connecticut, and died at Canaan (later Lebanon Springs), Columbia County, New York, August 5, 1812. John married Eunice PORTER on November 3, 1757. Eunice died at the age of 65 years on August 10, 1803. John and Eunice were interred at the old graveyard, Lebanon Springs.

At Wlastonbury, John WADHAMS and his brothers, Caleb (1720-1765) and Enos (1731-1756), signed a petition to form a military company in Marlborough, Hartford County, Conn. In March of 1765, John and Eunice were admitted as members of the church at Pittsfield.

From the History of Columbia County, New York, at the End of the Century, "John WADHAMS was the first to settle in the northeastern part and was one of the first in the town (New Lebanon). He was led into the locality in the summer of 1762, while hunting for his cattle, which had strayed from his home in Berkshire, Massachusettes. He was so pleased with the appearance of the new country that he made it his home in 1764, settling on what is now the Elijah BAGG place. This land, 300 acres, was afterwards granted to Ephraim KEYES, from whom WADHAMS purchased it, he having acknowledged the grant. It is said that when the Massachusetts boundary was adjusted, WADHAMS found his house a few rods across the line in that State. Vowing that he would not live outside New York, he summoned his neighbors to aid and removed his home into the Empire State."

John WADHAMS had a very creditable military record, extending over the greater part of his life. In 1755, on September 2, he enlisted in Captain Joseph SAVAGE'S Company during the French and Indian War, and was discharged the following 6th of December (Connecticut Hist. Soc Coll., Vol. 9, p. 82). In 1756 he was on the muster roll of the Third Company, Fourth Regt., Major HINMAN'S Company (Ibid, p. 147). In the American Revolution, "John WADHAMS served as a Private in Capt. Samuel CLARK'S Company of Col. POWELL'S (Berkshire County) Regt.; enlisted July 22, 1779; discharged August 26, 1779; service 1 mo., 12 days, at New Haven, Conn., including 7 days (131 miles) travel home. Roll sworn to at Lanesborough" (Mass. Soldiers and Sailors in the Revolution, Vol. 16, p. 366). "John WADDAMS served as a Private in Capt. CLARK'S Company, in a detachment from Col. Barnabas SEARS' Regiment; enlisted July 18, 1781; discharged Nov. 2, 1781; service 3 mos., 21 days, 'up the Mohawk River,' including 5 days (100 miles) travel home; regiment raised for 3 months. Roll sworn to in Berkshire Co." Ibid, Vol. 17, p. 702.

Darius WADHAMS, son of John and Eunice (PORTER) WADHAMS, was born about 1774 in Pittsfield, Massachusettes, and died about 1813 in Courtland County, New York, where he had been living for several years. He married Anna WILLIAMS, said to have been a niece of the David WILLIAMS who helped capture Major ANDRE in Tarrytown, New York. Darius and Anna WADHAMS of Cincinnatus, New York, sold land in Cincinnatus to John TRYON of Canaan. Columbia County, New York on January 21, 1807 (Recorded in Syracuse, Onondaga Co., N. Y.). After the death of Darius WADHAMS his two children, Clarissa Marietta and Alonzo, were taken to his old home in Columbia County, New York, and brought up by his relatives. His widow married John WILDER of Bristol, Ontario Co., N. Y.; they had one child, Hannah WILDER, who married Jacob Van ARSDALE and lived in Penn Yan, New York; they had two daughters. After Mr. WILDER'S death Mrs. WILDER married Sharon BOOTHE of Manchester, Ontario County, New York, by whom she had two children, John BOOTHE and Adeline BOOTHE, the latter married O. G. WHEELER. Mrs. Anna (WILLIAMS) WADHAMS WILDER BOOTHE lived to be 94 years of age. She died in Manchester, New York.

Clarissa Marietta WADHAMS, daughter of Darius and Anna (WILLIAMS) WADHAMS, was born February 29, 1805, in Hancock, Berkshire Coounty, Massachusettes, and died September 26, 1846, in Marathon, Cortland County, New York. She married January 23, 1827, in Lebanon Springs, Columbia County, New York, Joseph LOVELL. He was born May 15, 1805, in Rutland, Vermont, the son of Joseph Allen and Lucy (CARPENTER) LOVELL, and died March 30 March, 1886, in Anamosa, Iowa. Immediately after their marriage they settled in Harrison, Cortland Coounty, New York.

Mr. LOVELL married a second time and had three sons who were living in 1911, in Ohio.
