Mr. and Mrs. William J. MERRITT and their children were the first white settlers in Athens township. Mr. MERRITT was born September 5, 1803, in Belmont county, Ohio. Mrs. MERRITT's maiden name was Marie SNEDAKER. She was born in 1805. They were united in marriage in Belmont county but soon moved to Morgan county, Ohio and later to Jackson county. Their ten children were Daniel, Peter, Nancy, Andrew Jackson, Elizabeth, Jane, John, Ellen, Alice and William J. In 1853 their entire family including the families of their married children came to Iowa by team, remaining in Washington county that winter, and in the spring of 1854 some of the family came to Athens township and built their, first log cabin in Lott's Creek township. A few months later when the rest of the family arrived, they moved out on the prairie two or three miles in Section 17 and built a larger cabin with a loft. Later, a postoffice and stage coach station was established here as a station between Eddyville and Nebraska City, which was known as the MERRITT Station. Mr. MERRITT died in 1879 and Mrs. MERRITT died in 1883.

William and Maria's son Daniel and his family resided in the farm adjoining theirs.

The death of William R. MERRITT, well known pioneer resident of this city [Elgin], died at the family home, Sunday evening, March 14, 1915. Deceased had been confined to his bed only a few days, but his condition was such that the end was not unexpected, and was for two or three days prior to his demise. The funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon in the Methodist Episcopal Church by Rev. HANSEN, and was attended by hundreds of sorrowing friends, and the bereaved relatives. William R. MERRITT was born in Jackson county, Ohio, October 9, 1852 and died March 14, 1915, being 62 years, 5 months and 5 days of age. In 1853 he moved with his parents to [Ringgold County] Iowa, then a frontier state. In 1872 he was united in marriage to Nannie A. JACKSON, March 3d, 1872. Two years later they moved to Oregon, where he resided for a time and then returned to Iowa. In 1897 he again came to Oregon with his family and has resided here continuously since. Besides his wife, to whom he was married 43 years, he leaves a son, Clarence, and two daughters, Mrs. Arthur BUSSEAR and Mrs. Joe TAYLOR; also several grandchildren and two nephews, Cecil and Jewell GALLOWAY. Two daughters, Lillie and Josephine, preceded him to the grave. It is only fitting that The Recorder pay a tribute to the deceased. He was a man who not only claimed, but enjoyed the friendship of all who knew him. Ever honest and industrious, he was a man whom all were glad to call neighbor and friend, and such he was for he was one of the noblest citizens of Union county. When 17 years of age he became a member of the Methodist Church and ever remained a true and faithful member of the principles of that order. His popularity and the esteem held for him was attested by the large concourse of friends in attendance at the funeral, which was one of the largest ever held in Elgin. In his death Elgin lost a true and noble citizen; his wife a loving and ever faithful husband; his children a kind and ever faithful father. The Recorder joins with the bereaved wife and relatives in extending sympathy in this, their hour of sorrow.

Interment was made at Elgin Cemetery, Elgin, Union County, Oregon.

Daniel MERRITT was born in Ohio, June 5, 1827. He assisted with the farm work and attended the rural schools in the winter until he was married to E. Jane RICKABAUGH in February, 1850. They were the parents of three children, Sarah E., William R., and Finley Poe. After living here twelve years they moved to Mills county for three years. Then moved back for seven years. Then they moved to the Pacific coast where they lived in Washington and Oregon. Daniel's wife died in 1877 and he died later. Sarah MERRITT married Till GALLOWAY; they had two boys, Jewell and one other. Willie MERRITT married Nancy JACKSON and had five children. Lillie MERRITT married Edd LAIRD and had two children. Edna married William TIMBY and had three children, Mary Elaine, Billy and Martha Jane. Harry married Loraine Lynn. Jane married Elza LAIRD and had one child, Florence. Finley MERRITT married Mattie GREENROD and died young with no children.

Peter MERRITT was born in Ohio November 4, 1828. He received some education in subscription schools of the backwoods of Ohio. He was married February 23, 1850, to Minerva J. SKINNER who was born in Ohio. They had one child, Martha, besides some children who died in infancy. They came to Athens township of Ringgold County, Iowa, in the spring of 1855. They located on 120 acres of land and built a log cabin but later moved to Athens, Section 27. In 1879 he purchased his father's old home known as the MERRITT Station. Peter died May 4, 1902. Peter's daughter, Martha, married Clark LEWIS. She was the mother of Byron Peter LEWIS who married Daisy DAVIS, separated and married Frances PARKER. He had no children. Peter A. LEWIS married Florence (sic) BULLARD. She shot him when she mistook him when he came home from sitting up with the sick. She thought he was a chicken thief. [The newspaper clipping about the shooting can be found in Ringgold County's obituary pages.] John LEWIS married Vina GRAY. They had several children. Dell LEWIS married Ida Davenport; they had four children. Ella LEWIS married Fred KNITTLE; they have two or three children and live at Shenandoah. Clara LEWIS lives in Shenandoah. NORFOLK VA – Lissa Lynn McNABB, 55, passed away Friday, January 12, 2007 at Portsmouth Naval Hospital and a resident of Norfolk for over 10 years. Born in San Diego, CA she graduated from James Madison High School and went on to become a legal secretary for the majority of her career. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, reading books and watching movies with the family. She loved children and babies and loved her two grandsons very much.

She is survived by her loving husband Thomas A. McNABB, former husband, Louis VETERE; brothers, Rick and Kelly FOSTER; sisters Laura NORQUIST and Joyce BEAMER; son, Brian VETERE; daughters, Kristi VETERE, Jenna and Jordan McNABB, 11 nieces and nephews; and her 2 grandsons, Cameron and Caleb VETERE. In addition, she will be sadly missed by her brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and daughter-in-law, Christine VETERE and also be missed by her former co-workers and friends. A private memorial was be held in San Diego, CA for the family. Interment was made at LaVista Memorial Park, National City, San Diego County, California.
