EGLY PIONEER FAMILY

Jacob and Barbara (RIES) EGLY were the parents of Jacob, Joseph, Christian "Chris", Barbara, Mary, and Anna. Several of the children came to America, arriving in New York City September 25, 1852, and eventually came to Lee County, Iowa in 1855. They came to Ringgold County around the year 1857 and were naturalized shortly after their arrival.

When the EGLYS arrived in Ringgold County, there were plenty of grapes, plums, deer, wild turkey, quail, prairie chickens, and pheasants, as well as plenty of fur-bearing animals.

They went to Caledonia to mill and to either St. Joseph, Missouri or Keokuk, Iowa for supplies. None of the EGLYS hed office other than school directors.

The EGLYS were energetic, economical people and left large estates to their children. Their children and grandchildren were all well-respected people, honest, upright and friendly.

Jacob "Jake" EGLY was born circa 1824, Alsace, Lorraine, France. He served in the Civil War as a Private with Company H of the 125th PA Infantry, from August 14, 1862 until May 18, 1863, mustered out at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Jacob married Catherine (?) who was born in 1824. They had one son:

Barbara EGLY was born circa 1829, Alsace, Lorraine, France. She married Elias WEHRLE in Lee County, Iowa. Elias was born in Germany on February 22, 1832, and died at the age of 69 years on June 10, 1901. Barbara died on February 8, 1918. Celia J. WEHRLE, Barbara and Elias' daughter died at the age of 3 years, 2 months, and 4 days on Septtember 23, 1885. Nicholas WEHRLE died at the age of 51 years, 10 months and 2 days on September 24, 1916. They were interred at Oakland (a.k.a. Saltzman) Cemetery, Ringgold County, Iowa.

Chris WEHRLE was born in 1870, and died in 1929. His wife Lillie Elna was born in 1882, and died in 1959. They were interred at Merritt Cemetery, Ringgold County, Iowa.

Mary EGLY was born in 1834, Alsace, Lorraine, France, and died at the age of 47 years on April 16, 1881 with interment at Oakland (a.k.a. Saltzman) Cemetery, Ringgold County, IA. She married Conrad HETZEL.

Joseph EGLY was born circa 1833, Alsace, Lorraine, France, and died in January 7, 1884. Joseph married Maria [Mary] Ann GUTZMILLER who was born in France, 1827. Mary Ann died at the age of 79 years on February 8, 1914. Joseph and Mary Ann were interred at Oakland (a.k.a. Saltzman) Cemetery. Joseph and Mary Ann were the parents of nine children:

Christian "Chris" EGLY was born in Alsace, Lorraine, France on October 24, 1837. In 1858, he built a log house located south of the present [1936] frame house stands. Then he built a new log house in 1861, using it until 1894 when he built the frame house. Chris married Catherine "Kate" SALTZMAN on April 17, 1860, Mount Ayr, Iowa, by Silas TEDROW. Kate was born on December 15, 1839, Brieucourt, France. She and her family arrived in New York City on May 21, 1856. Kate died at the age of 63 years on May 8, 1928, Ringgold County. Kate was the last of the old generation of the three French families who settled in Ringgold County, except for Ike MOSIER who is over 94-years-old [1936]. Chris died at the age of 45 years on February 3, 1882. They were interred at the Oakland (a.k.a. Saltzman Cemetery) in Ringgold County. Chris and Kate were the parents of nine children:

Anna EGLY was born August 6, 1839 in France. She married at the age of nineteen years on April 18, 1859 to Nicholas SALTZMAN. Nicholas was born July 24, 1829 in France, and died at the age of 82 years on May 25, 1911, Ringgold County, Iowa. Anna died at the age of 70 years on February 24, 1910, Ringgold County. Anna and Nicholas were the parents of seven children:
