DELPHOS, IOWA RESIDENTS

1896 - 1910

On the south street, starting at the west end, south side:

1. Grandma SCHALPIA, later Mr. and Mrs. Owen WHITLATCH, depot agent

2. George and Emma WRIGHT, children: Frank, Edna, Stell, and Roy

3. Frank HILLHOUSE, depot agent, his sister Mary and his mother

4. Grandpa and Grandma HARLAN, Fannie CROOPER's parents; later Maj. BAKER purchased the home and John GOINS resided in the home with his wife Ester and their children: Oscar, Florence, Luther, Merle, Loyd, and Clair

5. Mr. AGEE bought W. POOLE's blacksmith shop and resided in this home with his family: Nannie, Lulu, Jesse, Austin, Charley, Veva, and John

6. Grandpa and Grandma BARKER

7. Anne (SEATON) STEELE, daughter of Frank and Adeline SEATON, and her husband Elmer STEELE, children: Sam, Ben, and Lizzie

8. J. W. BOWMAN's store which later burned down

9. The RUSH home around the corner; later owned by the BELLAMY family

  North side of South Street:

1. Marion LONG; later Marg EVENS and children: Ellis, Richard, Guy, Nina, and Robert

2. Rev. Evans, an evangelist minister, children: Rue and Lenny. Later the home was moved across the street and became the residence of the PYLE family. Ben SEATON built a home on this lot, residing there with his wife Fannie and sons Orr and Paul.

3. Frank and Fannie CROPPER, children: Florence "Flo", Bash, and Emma. Frank operated a shoe repair shop; Fannie and Flo prepared meals and took lunches to the trainmen.

4. Charlie LUNDERS, railroad section foreman, his wife and daughter, Inez RAINS; later the GARRET family, also a railroad section workman, his wife, and children: Libby, Wessel, and two or three younger children

5. Marion and Nancy HERRINGTON. Nancy was a sister of Mr. I. M. LONG. The HERRINGTON children: John, Clara (HERRINGTON) MALOY, Cora (HERRINGTON) ABARR, Cordor, Frank "Pete", Dick, and Ethel. Many of the town's young people gathered at the HERRINGTON on Sunday afternoons, holidays, and evenings.

6. The Baptist Church

7. Simeon and his wife Artie LONG; later Charlie and Belle HOOVER, children: Guy, Faye, and Fern

  North Street, beginning at west end, south side:

1. John and Sarah RICE, owned and operated a livery stable, children: May, Sim, Clyde, Ora, and Will (Ora and Will had left the parental home before the RICE family moved to Delphos)

2. Mr. and Mrs. Charlie STEDMAN, children: Mattie, Tracy, Jennie, Maggie, Walter, Lyle, Estel, John, and Ted

3. STEDMAN's restuarant and barber shop; the STEMAN family lived in back and upstairs

4. William and Trolley POOLE blacksmith shop

5. Sam STEDMAN store, largest building in Delphos; upper floor used by the Odd Fellows and other lodges, town programs, and other get-togethers

6. Mr. and Mrs. William POOLE, children: Trolley, Alva, and Laura

7. Dr. and Mrs. P. L. PRENTIS, children: Roscoe and Lorene

8. Christian Church

9. Allen and Sadie JACKSON, children: Jessie and Bert

  North side of the street, west side:

1. I. M. LONG store; later owned by Maj. and Mrs. BARKER who lived upstairs with their children: Ray, Ara, Ruby, and Claude. Later owned and operated as SEATON's store

2. Allen JACKSON hardward and lumberyard; most of the time afterwards this building was vacant

3. Ed and Mary THORNE, children: Krooks, Marion, Flora, and Ida; later Sam STEDMAN family. Residence was later torn down and Mrs. STEDMAN built a new home, later owned by Kathleen SEFRIT

4. Mr. and Mrs. Sam LANE, children: Reuben, Ola, Sylvia, Fred, and Dean

5. Percy BEASLEY; later Allen JACKSON family; later Reuben LANE family; later Ira MERRITT family. This residence was torn down and a new home was built on this lot

  West of the corner:

1. Ell and Daisy (VARNER) HOOVER, children: Earl, Stuart, and Elva

2. Mr. and Mrs. John LAHS, children: Mrs. Lindsay WRIGHT, John Jr., Hans, Henry, Willie, and Julia

3. Bill and Vina BLUNCK, children: Mbel, Mamie, George, Cecil, Lola, Ernest, Louise, and Bernice

  South from the corner:

1. Mr. and Mrs. John GEIGER, children: John, Willie, Joe, Matt, Ed, Charlie, Fannie, and Kate

  to the north and west:

1. Mr. and Mrs. Ed DEIBERT, children: Emma, Charlie, and Earl

2. Charlie and Cora DEIBERT, children: Gladys and Roy

3. Mildord and Ella VARNER, children: Cora, Omar, Daisy, and Frank

4. The STEPHENS family

5. Mr. and Mrs. John LINDSAY and their fourteen children

  to the northeast: 1. Clyde and Mona HOOVER, children: Vere and Alice

2. The GLOVER family, children: Mona, Port, and Roy

3. The STEPHENS, Stacy, Ross, and T. Jeff

4. The Sam BRAHMAN family

  Area farmers were:

1. G. Add TENNANT

2. Jimmy SPENCER, Sr. and Malinda Jane (FRANKLIN) SPENCER, parents of Ethelbert "Ethel" Augustus * and Alpha SPENCER, Alice, and Myrtle Olive. [Myrtle Olive, the youngest SPENCER child, married Dennis Wright CUMPSTON in 1899 and had her own family.]

3. Jimmy SPENCER family, children: Clarence, Bert, Lola, Loyd, Ilah, Avis, Sadie, Arzelle

4. Alpha and Eva SPENCER, children: Mamie, Cecil, Percy, Madge, Merritt, and Marie

4. Dennis and Maggie RUSH bought the Ethel SPENCER farm, residing there with their five daughters: Esther, Stella, Ruth, Naomi, and infant daughter
