James Ellis BURNS was born February 21, 1856 in Ohio after his father's death in 1855. James was the son of James BURNS Jr., born October 11, 1818, Ohio, and Angeline (CAMPBELL) BURNS, pictured at right.

Angeline (CAMPBELL) BURNS was born November 8, 1815, the daughter of Hugh Argylle CAMPBELL, Jr. (1783, OH - 1861, OH) and Margaret (MATHERS) CAMPBELL (1785, PA - 1848, OH). Angeline CAMPBELL and James BURNS, Jr. were married in Huron County, Ohio on February 16, 1843. Angeline died on June 17, 1889 at Enterprise in Polk County, Iowa, with interment at Marshalltown Cemetery, Waubonsie Township in Ringgold County, Iowa.

James BURNS, Jr. moved his family to Iowa on November 1855, settling at Dahlonega in Wapello County, Iowa. He died of typhoid fever before the birth of his youngest child, James Ellis BURNS, and was interred at McCormick Cemetery, Dahlonega, Iowa.

James Ellis BURNS married circa 1883 to Mary Mae BRINER. In the year of 1885, James' mother Angeline wrote a letter to James' brother Theodore Scott BURNS (1844-1914), stating that James Ellis' health was not good. Angeline didn't say what kind of health problems James was experiencing. Two years later James Ellis BURNS died on June 1, 1887 at the age of 31 years.

James' brother Theodore Scott BURNS, a farmer, enlisted at Dahlonega, Iowa as a Private on August 9, 1862 for service of three years during the Civil War. He was assigned to Company H of the 36th Regiment of the Iowa Infantry. A note on one of his muster rolls states, "This soldier was engaged in battle of Helena, Arkansas on July 4, 1865 and at Battle at Elkins Ford on Little Missouri River, Arkansas. April 4, 1864, and was also engaged at Marks Mills, Arkansas on April 25, 1864 in which he was severely wounded." Casualty sheets show him as captured at Marks Mill and returning from missing in action on 23 May 1864 in Little Rock. He was treated at the regimental hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas between October, 1864 to his time of discharge at Davenport, Iowa, May 20, 1865. Theodore died at Rich Hill City, Bates County, Missouri at the age of 69 years on January 1st of 1914. He was interred at Green Lawn Cemetery, Rich Hill City, Missouri.

Mary Mae (BRINER) BURNS, wife of James Ellis BURNS, was born at Van Wert, Decatur County, Iowa on February 28 of 1863. She died at the age of 79 on January 6, 1943. Mary Mae (BRINER) and James Ellis BURNS were the parents of three children:

1) Luther BURNS, born circa 1883, Grand River, Decatur Co. IA; died circa 1885
2) Benton BURNS, born 1885, Grand River, Decatur Co. IA
3) Thressie BURNS
    born 07 Apr 1885, Decatur Co. IA; died 29 Aug 1923, Heber City UT

Thressie BURNS, born April 7th, 1885, the daughter of Mary Mae (BRINER) and James Ellis BURNS, married Charles Francis MOSES on September 21, 1910. Sometime later, Thressie and Charles divorced. Thressie married second to Edgar ADAIR. Thressie died at the age of 38 as a result of a tragic car accident on August 29, 1923, Herber City, Utah, and was intered at Vernal Cemetery, Vernal, Utah.

Edgar Henry ADAIR was born June 30, 1882, Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa. He died at the age of 80 in March 27, 1963, Utah County, Utah where he was interred. Edgar and Thressa were the parents of two children:

Charles Francis MOSES, 2nd husband of Thressie (BURNS) ADAIR MOSES, was born at Lawrence, Kansas, on June 6, 1888, and died on July 2, 1972, Deshler, Henry County, Ohio, at the age of 84 years. He was interred at Woodland Cemetery, Bartlow Township of Henry County, Ohio. Thressie and Charles were the parents of four children:

1) Meribah "Essie" Mae (MOSES) CLARDY
    born 30 May 1911, LaPorte Co. IN; died 30 Jun 1996, Escondido CA
2) Ancel Reynold MOSES
    born 11 Oct 1912, Valparaiso IN; died 02 Jul 1991, Findlay, Hancock Co. OH
3) Forrest Joy Pinkerton MOSES
    born 14 Sep 1914Westville IN; died 01 Aug 1943, Milton Center, Wood Co. OH
4) Eva Louise MOSES
    born 24 Oct 1915; died 29 Aug 1923, Daniel's Canyon UT

Charles and Thressie (BURNS) ADAIR MOSES were traveling with the MOSES children, Meribah, Ancel, Forrest, and Eva when the car went over an embankment and into a creek at Daniel's Canyon 12 miles east of Heber City, Utah, on August 29, 1923. Eva died at the crash site. Thressie died shortly after the accident. Charles, Meribah, Ancel, and Forrest escaped unharmed.
