First Baptist Church holds "Celebration of the Past" Oct. 1

First Baptist Church worship committee will be holding a "celebration of the past" service Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. at the First Baptist Church on Fillmore and Jefferson streets.

The community is invited to participate in the singing, communion and memory time during this special service inside the church.

A candlelighting ceremony will occur when members of the First Baptist Church, carrying a lit candle, will meet members of the Mount Ayr Presbyterian Church, with unlit candles, half-way between the churches and then continue on into the Presbyterian Church.

The two congregations of First Baptist Church and Mount Ayr Presbyterian Church have voted and approved the joining of the churches that will take place on January 1, 2004.

On Oct. 4, the First Baptist Church will hold a public auction including all furnishings, fixtures, stained glass windows and appliances with the money going to the building fund.

Baptist-Presbyterian congregation to move to new facility soon

The year of 2005 promises to be an exciting one for the United Baptist-Presbyterian Church congregation as they get ready to move into the new church building located at the corner of U.S. Highways 169 and 2.

The last few services at the old church at 205 N. Polk St. in Mount Ayr will be as follows:

  • Jan. 23 - Phil BARRETT, general Presbyter for the Des Moines Regional Presbytery, will be giving the message.

  • Jan. 30 - Simply Voices, a singing group from Mount Ayr United Methodist Church, will be presenting a program during the worship service.

As February begins, the congregation is hoping to move into the new facility. There will be a celebration of dedication and an open house of the building sometime in the spring.

However, we invite anyone without a church home to worship with us at any time. Sunday school begins at 9:30 a.m., worship service following at 10:30 a.m. each Sunday.

Bell removed from United Presbyterian Church building

As dismantling of the former Presbyterian Church by Mount Ayr continues, the bell was removed from the bell tower last week. The bronze bell will be restored and be included as part of the sign for the new United Baptist-Presbyterian church building which has opened at the west intersection of Highways 169 and 2 in Mount Ayr. Some of the stained glass windows from the church are also part of the new building.

A crane from Southwest Iowa Rural Electric Cooperative helped retrieve the bell from its lofty perch.

    UBPC dedication scheduled

Plans are set for the dedication of the new United Baptist-Presbyterian Church building. The building, which was completed this February, has been home to the congregation now for two months. The general contractor was Kelly RICHARDS and the architect that desinged the basic plans was Charles MANDERS.

Sunday, April 24, there will be regular Sunday school at 9:30 a.m. with church following. Preaching at this service will be a former minister, Rev. Dr. Lloyd SHAW, now of Collinsville, IL. Dr. SHAW is the author of several books. He was pastor to the Mount Ayr Presbyterian congregation in the mid-1950s.

The service of dedication will be at 2 p.m. on April 24. Rev. Pete BRANTNER, who served the united churches until last October, will be presiding at this service. Following will be a reception and tours of the building. The church would like to invite the community to come to this special day in our church.
