CHARLES EDWARD SWANSON
1879 - 1970
Charles Edward SWANSON, a Representative from Iowa, was born on a farm near Galesburg, Knox County, Ill., January 3,
1879. In 1890 he moved to Iowa with his parents, who settled on a farm in Ringgold County and attended the public schools
of Galesburg, Ill., and Clearfield, Iowa, graduating from Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., in 1902, and from the law
department of Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., in 1907. He was the principal of schools, Altona, Ill., 1902-1904.
He was admitted to the bar in 1907 and commenced practice in Council Bluffs, Iowa, serving as the prosecuting attorney of
Pottawattamie County, Iowa, 1915-1922; elected as a Republican to the Seventy-first and to the Seventy-second Congresses
(March 4, 1929-March 3, 1933); unsuccessful candidate for re-election in 1932 to the Seventy-third Congress and for
election in 1934 to the Seventy-fourth Congress. He resumed the practice of law. He served as chairman, City Board of Tax
Review, 1949-1968. Mr. SWANSON died in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on August 22, 1970, with interment in Walnut Hill Cemetery.
