GRANT A. SHIFFLETT
Grant A. SHIFFLETT, a Representative from Ringgold County, Iowa, was born in December of 1890, in Bureau County,
Illinois. The SHIFFLETT family came to Iowa in 1900, residing in Hamilton and Madison Counties where Grant received his
education in the rural schools of the vicinity. He graduated from Earlham High School and the business college in
Cedar Rapids. Gran married in 1914 to Mary L. COMPTON (1893-1960) of Earlham, the daughter of Silas and Elizabeth
(McKIBBEN) COMPTON. The couple were the parents of a daughter,
Martha Irene. In 1914 the SHIFFLETT family moved to a farm in Ringgold County where Grant was engaged in stock-raising. He
was engaged in the banking business at Tingley and Diagonal, where he also served on the city councils. Grant, a
member of the Methodist Church, always took an active interest in community welfare with particular attention to the
schools and churches. A Republican, Grant was elected as a representative to the Iowa General Assembly in 1934. Grant died
in 1986 and was interred at Earlham Cemtery, Earlham, Madison County, Iowa.
