Lifetime service award to Ron Scott
Former Mount Ayr Community high school wrestling coach, Ron SCOTT was honored by Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials
Association as one of the 2008 recipients of the association's Lifetime Service Award. SCOTT was presented the award
at the Iowa Chapter Honors Banquet held in Des Moines on Saturday, Oct. 25. The other honor recipients were: Steve
BAIER of Griswold, Larry RILEY of Greenfield, Dan MASHEK of Don Bosoc/North Scott, and Roger Williams of Decorah.
SCOTT was a prep wrestler in Tulsa, OK, before continuing his wrestling carerr at Northwest Missouri State University
[Maryville, Missouri], where he was a two-year letter winner. SCOTT began his teaching and coaching career at
Mount Ayr Community in 1966. He was the Raiders' head coach for 30 years, compiling a 198-137-4 record. He directed
one undefeated team and had two others that suffered only one loss. A total of 57 Raiders, including his son, Jeff
SCOTT, were state meet qualifiers. Raider Curt BRABY was a state champion and several other young men were place
winners under "Scotty's" tutelage. Thirty Raiders continued their wrestling careers in college and five had become
wrestling coaches including his son, Jeff, who coaches in Jackson, MO. SCOTT was Southwest Iowa district coach
of the year in 1984-85 and in 1994 was inducted into the Iowa High School Athletic Association's Hall of Fame.
Colleagues and former wrestlers praise coach SCOTT for his leadership, committment, loyalty, and dedication to
developing solid character. He helped organize the first state wrestling coaches and officials clinic. SCOTT
currently conducts workshops and meetings for the Institute of Character Development. Ron and his wife, Dana,
still reside in Mount Ayr.

Honoring "Scotty"
Long-time Mount Ayr teacher, counselor and coach Ron SCOTT will be honored at this year's Mount Ayr Duals wrestling
tournament this weekend. In memory of SCOTT, who passed away suddenly last spring, the tournament has been renamed
the Ron SCOTT Duals. Dsigned by Podium Ink, the banner, pictured above, commemorating "Scotty" will hang in the high
school gym throughout the tournament. Details about the tournament and the dedication ceremony can be found on page 8.

Mount Ayr duals to be renamed for Ron Scott.
Mount Ayr Community high school will host the 25th edition of their Dual Wrestling Tournament January 11-12, 2013.
Nine teams will compete for the championship of this round-robin event, with simultaneous action taking place on four
mats. Rounds one through four will get underway at 4:30 p.m. Friday, and the wrestling resumes at 10 a.m. Saturday
morning with rounds five through nine.
Teams competing include Durant, Harlan, Martensdale-St. Marys, Oakland-Riverside,
Council Bluffs St. Albert, Shenandoah, Penney (Hamilton, MO), Lathrop, MO and Mount Ayr.
A series of special events
are planned for the silver anniversary tournament, culminating with a ceremony to dedicate the tournament in memory of
coach Ron SCOTT. Coach SCOTT passed away suddenly last spring, and the Mount Ayr athletic department and the Raider
wrestling team will honor his memory by renaming the tournament the Ron SCOTT Memorial Dual Tournament.
"Scotty" was
the head wrestling coach at Mount Ayr from 1966-1996, compiling a career record of 198-137-4. After stepping down from
that position, he continued to work with coaches and athletes through the Pursuing Victory With Honor program, an
initiative of the Iowa Institute for Character Development. In 2009, Scotty started a third career as the Midwest
Area Director for International Cooperating Ministries, where he worked until the time of his death.
Coach SCOTT
was selected to to the Iowa High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame in 1994, and in 2008 he was presented with the
National Wrestling Hall of Fame Lifetime Service Award.
He helped guide 57 Raider wrestlers to the state tournament, including
his oldest son Jeff.
Colleagues and former athletes praise SCOTT for his leadership, commitment, loyalty and dedication
to building strong character. Through his work as a teacher, coach and guidance councelor, he touched the lives of thousands
of young people.
The dedication ceremony will take place at approximately 2 p.m. Saturday, January 12. Coach SCOTT'S family
is expected to be on hand for the occasion. In addition, a group of Coach SCOTT's former wrestlers will present a
plaque to the school commemorating the impact that Scotty had on their lives.
The Mount Ayr athletic department
also announces the creation of the Ron SCOTT Wrestler of Character Award. Characer was vitally important to Coach
SCOTT, who believed that without honor, it was impossible to achieve true victory. The Ron SCOTT Wrestler of Character
Award will recognize a young person who demonstrates the type of character that Coach SCOTT lived each day of his life.
Each competing school was invited to nominate one of their wrestlers who had displayed exemplary character. A committee
of wrestlers, coaches, officials and teachers who worked with Coach SCOTT will review the nominations and select the
Ron SCOTT Wrestler of Character.
