R. REYNARD
R[obert] REYNARD, farmer, section 8, Benton Township, is a native of Jefferson County, Ohio, born April 18, 1818.
His father, Marmaduke REYNARD, was a native of England, and came to Ohio in 1816. His mother was Mary (SHAW) REYNARD,
also a native of England. They were married in their native country, and brought six children with them to America. They
were the parents of eleven children, seven sons and fourh daughters - John, Mary, William, Marmaduke and Jane were
born in England; Ann, Robert, Hannah, Thomas and Joseph were born in America. The oldest child, name Robert, was born
in England, and died in Pennsylvania. Our subject passed his early life in assisting on the farm, and his education
was obtained in the common schools of Jefferson County. He was married March 3, 1842, to Miss Jane VAIL, a native of
Pennsylvania, and daughter of Elisha and Martha (KIRKE) VAIL. To this union were born six children, five of whom
are living - Marmaduke, Martha Jane, William E., Thomas B., Nathan H. and James. The deceased is Ruth Anna. Mrs.
REYNARD died in 1855, and September 21, 1858, Mr. REYNARD was married to Mrs. Priscilla BARTHOLOMEW, whose maiden name
was PEOPLES. She was a daughter of Reese and Nancy (KIMBERLAND) PEOPLES, and was a widow with two children - Josephine
and Edward E. To this second union have been born nine children, five living - Mary, Fremont, Joseph S.,
Frank R. and John P. Mr. REYNARD and family resided in Ohio until 1877, then came to Ringgold County, and located upon his
present farm in Benton Township. His farm contains 160 acres of land, in a good state of cultivation and well
improved. He has a well-furnished cottage, out-buildings for stock, orchard and small fruits. He is a worthy and
consistent member of the Protestant Methodist church, and politically is a Republican. He has given his children
excellent educational advantages, and two of them, Mary and Frank, are fitted for teachers. Joseph is a law student,
and will make the law his profession. Since coming to this county Mr. REYNARD has, by honest dealing, secured the
confidence and respect of all who know him, and his word is considered as good as his bond. Postoffice, Maloy.
NOTE: Robert REYNARD died in 1899 with interment at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr,
Ringgold County, Iowa. Joseph S. REYNARD was born in 1862, and died in 1932 with interment at Redding Cemetery,
Ringgold County, Iowa. Dr. John P. REYNARD was born in 1869, and died at the age of 52 in 1921 with interment at Maple Hill Cemetery,
Osceola, Clarke County, Iowa. Kate B. REYNARD was born June 1, 1882, and died August 12, 1882 with interment
at Platte River Cemetery near Maloy, Ringgold County, Iowa.
ROBERT REYNARD FAMILY
Robert REYNARD came to Ringgold County in 1877 from Ohio and settled in Benton Township. He was born April 18, 1818. His father,
Marmaduke REYNARD, was a native of England and came to Ohio in 1816. His mother, Mary (SHAW) REYNARD, was also a native
of England. They were born in England and brought six of their children with them to America. They were the parents of
eleven children, seven sons and four daughters. Robert REYNARD passed his early life on the farm and his education
was obtained in the common schools of Ohio. He was married March 3, 1842 to Jane VAIL. To this union were born six children.
His wife died in 1855 and September 21, 1858, he was married to Priscilla BARTHOLOMEW. To this secon union were born
nine children. With the two children of his wife from a former marriage, they had seventeen children. His Benton
farm contained 160 acres. They were worthy members of the Methodist Church. Mary and Frank were school teachers of
Ringgold County. Later Joe REYNARD and his brother Frank were lawyers in Mount Ayr for years and Frank REYNARD was
county attorney many terms. He married Helen FRESHWATER on May 9, 1894, and they have four living children: Edna
married Floyd HARDY and has one adopted child, Phyllis Maxine; John married Retha KNITTLE and they have two children,
Betty Ann and Marilyn K.; Loren married Maud McCLARY and has one son, Philip; Paul REYNARD is not married.
Of the Robert REYNARD family only one daughter, Mary is living [1937]. Frank REYNARD died in 1927 and Joe died a few
years later. Mary SARGENT lives at Fort Morgan, Colorado, and not much is known of her and her family.
