H. T. MILLER
H[oratio] T[hompson] MILLER, proprietor of the Clinton Valley Stock Farm, Clinton Township, resides on section 3. He
was born in Rockbridge County, Virignia, March 6, 1836, son of Henry MILLER whose sketch appears
elsewhere in this work*. He was the youngest of the family, and his early life was spent on the farm and
in attending the common schools of his native State. He married March 24, 1859, to Miss Elizabeth Jane
ZOLLMAN, also a native of Rockbridge County, and daughter of Henry and Elviria (SHAFER) ZOLLMAN. A short
time after his marriage Mr. MILLER started for Iowa, coming all the way by team. He first purchased forty
acres of wild land in 1862, and one year later bought forty acres adjoining. Twenty-five acres had been broken
and a rude log cabin constructed. A few apple trees had also been planted. He has since added to his original
purchase until he owns a farm of 815 acres. It consists largely of rich bottom lands on the West Fork of
Grand River, and is known to be one of the best stock farms in Ringgold County. In a few years the rude log
cabin gave way to the hewed-log house, and the latter soon gave way to his present residence, which was erected in 1876. It is built
in modern style and is well furnished. He has a large corn barn, 32 x 50 feet, sixteen-foot posts with a rock basement
of eight feet. It is substantially built, and has all the modern conveniences for feeding and caring for stock. It
is one of the best arranged barns in Southern Iowa. Mr. MILLER is extensively engaged in stock-raising and
feeding, and is making a specialty of thorough-bred short-horn cattle, and in his herd of twenty-five can be found
some of the best registered stock in Ringgold County. He also has a number of improved draught horses.
Politically Mr. MILLER is a Republican. He has served creditably as township clerk, member of School Board, and
in 1883 was delegte to the State Convention. He is a member of the United Brethren in Christ church, and
is always interested in religious or educational matters. Mr. and Mrs. MILLER are the parents of ten children -
Carrie B., now Mrs. R. L. LOUTZENHISER; Elvira C., now Mrs. C. E. HOOVER; Virginia E., now Mrs. John WARDEN;
Margaret, Jane, Henry, John T., Charles Z., William B., and Bessie Dot. Mr. MILLER has by honest dealing won the
confidence of this community. Postoffice, Redding.

Henry Jr. and Catharine (MONTGOMERY) MILLER
James' father Henry MILLER, Jr. was born January 25, 1786, Rockbridge County, Virginia, and died March 25, 1865. Henry married James'
mother Catharine MONTGOMERY February 15, 1816. Catharine was born August 22, 1792, Rockbridge County, Virginia, and
died May 8, 1855, Redding, Ringgold County, Iowa. Henry and Catharine were interred at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, Iowa.
 From History of the House of Ochiltree of Ayrshire, Scotland: Horatio Thompson Miller, youngest son and
child of Henry and Catharine (MONTGOMERY) MILLER was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia, March 6, 1836, and came to
Ringgold County, Iowa, in 1859, and settled on the farm which he held until his death. In September, 1859, he married in
Rockbridge County, Miss Elizabeth Jane ZOLLMAN, oldest daughter of Henry and Elvira ZOLLMAN. She was born September,
1838, in Rockbridge County. The same year they came, by wagon, to RInggold County, where with only a team, and a few
utensils, with which to cook on a fire place, they began to make a home; and by their combined industry, and economy,
acquired an abundance of this world's goods. They retired from farm life, as old age came on. They had earned rest by
years of toil. They had always extended an open door of hospitality, to all friends. Mr. MILLER was a successful farmer, and
stock-raiser. He took pride and pleasure in introducing into the country the very best stock. He was noted for his
fair dealing, and practical honesty. He was brought up in the Associate Reformed Presbyterian church, in Virginia, and
was based on the 75th question, of the Shorter Catchism; which he had memorized in his youth, namely; "What is forbidden
in the 8th commandment?" In all temperance matters, Mr. MILLER was a stalwart, of the stalwarts. He was uncompromsing
in his opposition to the liquor traffic, in any form. In the memorable campaign for prohibition, in 1882, he was
Vice-president of the county organization, and worked untiringly for the amendment. As a result, every township in the
county was carried. He could never find in his heart, a sufficient reason for forgiving the ignoble part of those who
overthrew that amendment. He regarded that defect, as the betrayal of the deepest interests of the people. He
caried in his heart, a loving remebrance, of the old church of his fathers in Virginia. When last visiting the old home,
and church, he settled on the church an endowment of $1000.00 as a lasting evidence of gratitude. Of late years, he
has beenunited with the M.E. church, at Redding, and has generously aided in its finances. In familiar talks, he always
expressed his appreciation of the religion, and teachings of Christ. He died February 19, 1914, in his 78th year. He
went down into the valley and shadow of death, trusting in the leadership of the Good Sherpard. He was buried in
the Redding Cemetery. To Mr. and Mrs. MILLER were born 11 children, 2 dying in infancy. The others are as follows:
