CYRUS HORACE HICKENLOOPER

1833 - 1923

Cyrus Horace HICKENLOOPER was born on June 11, 1833, in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, the son of Thomas HICKENLOOPER (1793-1881) and Julia Ann (HAWKINS) HICKENLOOPER (1801-1890) who came from Pennsylvania to Iowa in 1846, settling in Monroe County. On September 27, 1855, he married Sarah J. LOGAN (1845-1900). Cyrus and Sarah were the parents of two daughters; Martha "Mattie" (HICKENLOOPER) HUMMELL, born circa 1856, and, Alice May HICKENLOOPER, born January 12, 1859, both born in Platteville, Taylor, County, Iowa.

Cyrus probably was the photographer C. HICKENLOOPER who paid a $10 federal occupational tax in Glenwood, Iowa, in May of 1864. HICKENLOOPER was a photographer in Plattville, Iowa, in 1865. In September of 1867, he remarried to Nancy E. BRADLEY in Taylor County, Iowa. Nancy was born in Missouri in 1852, the daughter of P. M. and Jala W. BRADLEY.

The 1870 census of Mount Ayr, Iowa, described HICKENLOOPER as a thirty-seven-year-old photographer who owned $1,000 in real estate and $600 worth of personal property. At that time he and his wife Nancy had two Iowa-born children: Angelia HICKENLOOPER, two years of age, and Fannie HICKENLOOPER, nine months old.

Some family histories list a third marriage on May 12, 1880, Phillips County, Kansas, to Emma GUEST (1858-1888) with a son, Fred G. HICKENLOOPER (1882-1953) born to this marriage.

Cyrus Horace HICKENLOOPER died on September 29, 1923, Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa, with interment at Oakview Cemetery, lot 20, Troy Township of Monroe County, Iowa.
