WILLIAM H. HAVILAND

Civil War Flags.jpg William H. HAVILAND, a representative of one of the oldest families of Washington Township, was born on the old homestead in Washington Township, Ringgold County, Iowa, July 6, 1862. His father, William A. HAVILAND, was a native of Canada. He came to Illinois when a young man, and was married in that state to Mary J. SKIDMORE. He subsequently came to Ringgold County, Iowa, with his family, which then consisted of his wife and two children, when he settled on a farm which is still occupied by our subject. The farm then contained 160 acres of raw prairie land, entirely unimproved. The father being a carpenter, immediately erected a small log house for his family, and began improving his farm, but later in life resumed working at his trade. He was an industrious citizen, and was one of the most respected men in Washington Township, where he resided so many years. He died August 27, 1885, leaving a wife and three children - Elzina, wife of R. A. SPENCE, of Mt. Ayr; John A., and William H., our subject.

The mother is now in her sixty-second year, and is making her home with our subject, on the old homestead. The father was a member of the Masonic fraternity. At his death he left a well-cultivated farm, containing 150 acres, which was purchased by our subject, he having bought the interests of the other heirs.

William H. HAVILAND was married February 19, 1882, to Miss Tillie YACHACK, who was born in Ringgold County, Iowa, a daughter of Wentzal YACHACK, a Bohemian by birth. They are the parents of two children - Ethel V. and Vella I.

Mr. HAVILAND is classed among the successful stock-raisers in his neighborhood, being principally engaged in raising cattle and hogs.

NOTE: William A. HAVILAND, born in Canada in 1821, died August 27, 1885. Mary Jane (SKIDMORE) was born in Montgomery County, Indiana, May 24, 1824, the daughter of William and Elizabeth (HAGEMAN) SKIDMORE, and died June 12, 1899, Washington Township of Ringgold County, Iowa. William and Mary Jane were interred at Marshalltown Cemetery near Benton, Ringgold County, Iowa.
