A Mount Ayr graduate has received national recognition for her cancer research.
Lori (Sickels) Friedman, PhD, has
been selected as a 2014 Rising Star by the Healthcare Businesswomen's Association (HBA). She will be honored May 1 at a
formal ceremony in New York City.
A 1982 graduate of Mount Ayr Community high school, Friedman is the daughter of
Bob and Kay Sickels of Mount Ayr.
Friedman is the senior director of translational oncology at Genentech Research and
Early Development. Genetech is a California-based biotech company that uses human genetic information to discover,
develop, manufacture and commercialize medicines to treat patients with serious of life-threatening medical conditions.
According to a formal statement from HBA, "Lori has consistently demonstrated scientific excellence and courage
during her 10 years at Genentach. Under her leadership, the translational oncology department at Genetech's research
division delivered two molecules for late stage development in 203, establishing a strong franchise in a very compeitive
field. Lori chais the Genetech Women in Science and Engineering core team that focuses on cultivating the next generation
of women leaders. She is highly regarded and broadly sought as a mentor."
After graduation from Mount Ayr, Friedman
went on to the University of Iowa and eventually received her PhD at the University of California, Berkley.
According to information from HBA, the Rising Star awards recognize professionals
in various sectors of the health care industry, including pharmaceutical, biotechnology, advertising, public relations,
medical education and market research, among other fields.
