Ringgold Record
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
1896

CLERK J. S. EVERETT.

Civil War Flags.jpg John S. EVERETT was born on a farm in Moniteau county, Mo., Dec. 21, 1843. While he was yet quite young his parents moved to Marion county, Iowa, where he lived on a farm until 1862, when he enlisted in Co. G, 40th Iowa infantry, serving three years. Returning from the army, he was again engaged in farming until 1869, when he entered a law office at Pella. The members of the firm under whom he studied were Gov. W. M. STONE, Judge O. B. AYRES and Maj. H. G. CURTIS, all noted in Iowa affairs.

Mr. EVERETT was married in 1872, admitted to the bar the same year, and the next year came to Ringgold county. He started a law, real estate and abstract office but sold out in 177 and moved to Osceola. It took less than a year to satisfy him that Mt. Ayr was the place that he wanted to make his permanent home.

For 13 years he filled a responsible position in the Citizens' bank and in 1892 was elected clerk of the courts, a position for which his previous legal training gave him especial fitness.

Mr. EVERETT makes an accommodating and faithful public official.

NOTE: John S. EVERETT died at the age of 53 years, 2 months and 20 days on April 17, 1897. He was interred at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, Iowa.

Transcription and note by Sharon R. Becker, May of 2010
