GARRETT BIRD FAMILY

Garrett BIRD was born in Pennsylvania on June 7, 1808, the son of John BIRD. It isn't known who Garrett married first, but from that marriage were born three children:

1) Elizabeth Jane "Eliza" BIRD, b. 23 Aug 1831; d. 16 Dec 1875, Bonner Springs, KS
    married Dr. Frank NICHOLS
2) Rebecca BIRD, b. 28 Nov 1833
3) Rachel BIRD, b. 1837

Garrett married second in Grant County, Indiana, on August 12, 1841 to Rebecca HARDESTY who was born October 18, 1821 in Ohio. Garrett BIRD, with a family consisting of a wife, three girls and two boys, came to Iowa from Indiana in 1849, and built a log cabin on section 17 of Poweshiek County. He did not enter the land on coming here, and after a residence of five years in the county moved to Missouri. On October 3, 1851, Elizabeth BIRD [Garrett's sister?] and Andrew HAFFIN were united in marriage, Joseph ROBERTSON, justice of the peace, performing the ceremony. This was the first wedding in Sugar Creek township of Poweshiek County.

Mr. ROBERTS, a brother-in-law of Garrett BIRD, came from Indiana and settled near the river. He resided there a short time and a child was born unto him. The wife and mother died soon after. Taking the motherless child in his arms, Mr. ROBERTS started from Poweshiek County, Iowa, on the long journey back to Indiana on foot.

In 1855, Garrett BIRD and his family settled in what would become Washington Township of Ringgold County. The first regular election in the northwestern section of Ringgold County was held at his home, and he was one of the election judges.

Garrett and Rebecca were residing in Albany of Gentry County, Missouri, during the 1860 census, and in Buchanan of Atchison County, Missouri, during the 1870 census.
