THOMPSON, DONALD AND HELEN
After serving in the U.S. Air Force, Helen and I lived in the Honey Creek, Iowa area, where we were both from originally. I was clerking for the old Updike Elevator at the time and Helen worked at Mutual of Omaha. In 1962 we purchased an acreage just north of Council Bluffs in Evergreen Gardens. I was then working for Peavey Company Terminal Elevator and Helen worked for Abstract Guaranty. In 1966 we purchased 80 acres 3 miles south and 2 miles west of Treynor from Mr. E.H. Spetman Sr. and we farmed it while continuing to work in town. After the Peavey Company curtailed it’s operations in Iowa, I worked a short time at Gate City Steel and the Railroad before getting more permanent work at Griffin Pipe Company. In 1970 we adopted a baby girl through Hillcrest Family Services and the United Methodist Church at Silver City. We named her Darlyn after Helen’s two brothers were killed, Darrel and Lynn. In about six months Darlyn developed epilepsy which quickly led to retardation. In 1972 we sold the place near Treynor and purchased a farm east of Silver City from Mrs. Irma Hays and moved there. In 1973 we adopted a baby boy whom we named Darin also from Hillcrest and the Methodist Church.
