ORD, GEORGE
George Ord, born February 26, 1886, was the son of
William Henry and Margaret O’Haver Ord. He married Mary Elen Batten, born
January 16, 1893, the daughter of William Henry Batten and Frances Soliday
Batten. They were united in marriage in Glenwood, Iowa on October 9, 1912.
Mary and George came to Silver City after living several years in Page,
Nebraska. George was an employee of the Union Pacific Railroad. He died in
1959. Mary now resides in the Glen Haven Rest Home, and is 87 years old.
George and Mary had fourteen children. Four of the boys served in the Navy
and one in the Army during
World War II. Mary was a “5 Star Mother”.
George Jr. married Ellen Burger of Beatrice, Nebraska. They have three
children, Janette, Daniel and Timothy. He worked for a Vise-Grip Mfg. Co.
for several years. Later he farmed and had a farm equipment business. He
held various offices as a member of the Shriner Lodge No. 26. He served in
the Army and died in 1975
Robert married Nora Johnson of Sibley, Iowa. They had four children,
Barbara, Thomas, Mary Jo and
Robert William. They live in Granada Hills, California. He owned a fleet
of trucks and operated a catering business. He is now retired although he
helps his son in the Dry Cleaning Business. He served in the Navy.
Roy married Buna Ballenger of Sidney Iowa They
have three children, Connie, Susan and Peggy. He owned and operated Skelly
Oil Station on Third Street in Council Bluffs for over 34 years. Prior to
operating his own business, he was employed at the Martin Bomber Plant in
Omaha, Nebraska. He is now retired.
Marvin married Margaret Robidoux of Council Bluffs, Iowa. They have three
children, Gordon, John and Paul. He was with Civil Service in the U.S.
Corps of Engineer’s Division as a machinist. He was a member of the Royal
Arch Masons and Harmony Chapter 25 and Order of Easter Star. He served in
the Navy and died in 1974.
Donald married Helen Eaton of Bakersfield, California. They live in
Glenwood, Iowa. He has two daughters, Carolyn and Donetta, and Helen has
one son, Dick, and two daughters, Linda and Sue from a previous marriage.
Donald and Harvey owned and operated a grocery store in Silver City for
several years. Donald owned and operated two laundromats and a dry
cleaning business in Glenwood for over 10 years and is now retired. He
served in the Navy.
Ellen married Dale L. Harper of Wayne, Nebraska. They have two sons,
Ronald and Richard. They live in Glenwood, Iowa, where they have owned and
operated a Farm Equipment business for over 33 years. In 1938, Ellen was
selected the Fall Festival Queen. Ellen graduated from the Van Sant
Business College in Omaha, Nebraska in 1940 and worked under Civil Service
in Finance Offices in Fort Robinson, Arkansas, and Camp Blanding, Florida,
where her husband was stationed during World War II. While he was
overseas, she transferred to Washington, D.C. in the Treasury Department
of Reconstruction Finance Corp.
Ella Mae married Cecil Harper of Winside, Nebraska. They have two
daughters, Donna Jean and Mary Lynn, and two sons, Thomas and Dennis. They
live in Glenwood, Iowa, where they own and operate a Short Line Farm
Equipment business since 1961. After graduation from high school, Ella Mae
was employed at the Martin Bomber Plant in Omaha, Nebraska in the Filing
Department.

Margaret married Richard Smith of San Diego, California, where they now
reside. They have one son, Jim. Margaret works in the Research Department
of Boeing Aircraft. Richard is retired from the Navy and is Chief Deputy
Clerk of the Supreme Court for the State of California.
Marie married Virgil Wickham of Oshkosh, Nebraska. They have three
children, Ronald, Edward and Michael. They live in Colorado Springs,
Colorado, where Marie works under Civil Service as a clerk in the
Commissary at Ft. Collins. Virgil is retired from Boeing Aircraft where
he was a Foreman.
Alta Ann married Anton (Tony) Kaczor of Ewing, Nebraska. They have one
son, Steven. and twin daughters, Mary and Marsha. They live in Council
Bluffs, Iowa. Alta Ann graduated from the Nebraska School of Beauty in
Omaha, Nebraska. She owned and operated her own beauty shop and previously
worked at the shop in the Blackstone Hotel and the Crestwood Shop.
Currently, she works with her husband in the Kirby Vacuum Sweeper
business.
James married Maxine Mayberry of Glenwood, Iowa where they reside. They
have two daughters, Jane and Cheryl. He is employed at the Robert’s Dairy
in Omaha, Nebraska, for the past several years. He served in the Air Corps
from 1952-1956, where he also was selected to play on the Air Base
Basketball Team.
Lois married Marvin Lintner of Tabor, Iowa. They live in Columbia, South
Carolina. They have one daughter, Madonna, and twin sons, Mark and
Michael. Lois worked as a clerk typist in the City National Bank building
in Omaha, Nebraska. Marvin is retired from the Air Corps and teaches in
Columbia School system.

ORD, HARVEY
Harvey Ord was born September 10, 1924, at O'Neil, Nebraska, the son of George and Mary Ord. On September 21, 1947, Harvey married Alene Marie Jones of Silver City, born September 26, 1947, daughter of Allen Jones and Wilma Deitchler. Harvey attended Silver City High School until 1943 when he joined the Navy during World War II. During the war, he served on the USS Massachusetts in the South Pacific. Upon returning home, he completed his education. Harvey is a member of the American Legion and Alene is a member of the Eastern Star. Both are members of the Methodist Church.
On January 1947 Harvey purchased the Ord Grocery Store from Harry Adams. Several years later his brother Don joined in the operation until 1970. Harvey and Don also owned and operated serveral laundromats in this area.
Harvey and Alene rand the grocery store in Silver City for thirty-two years before selling it in February of 1979. Harvey is presently the manager of the frozen food department at Hy Vee Store in Council Bluffs. Harvey and Alene have two daughters, Deborah Ann and Denise Kay.
Deborah Ann was born August 2, 1949 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She attended elementary school in Silver City and graduated from Glenwood High School and Nettelson Businesss School of Omaha. She is married to Robert Jones, son of Leonard and Helen Jones of Council Bluffs. They have one son Troy, born September 14, 1970, and are currently residing in Council Bluffs. Robert is employed with the Union Pacific Railroad and Deborah is a secretary for the C.P.A. in Council Bluffs.
Denise Kay was born May 1, 1951 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She attended elementary school in Silver City and graduated from Glenwood High School. On June 7, 1972, she married Ronald Guilliams, at the United States Naval Academy Chapel in Annapolis, Maryland. They have two daughters, Kristen Kay, born July 26, 1973 and Kara Renae, born February 15, 1977. Ronald is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and is currently a Captain in the United States Marine Corps.
ORD, JERRY
Jerry Ord was born on May 17, 1938, in Silver City. He married Lucille
McMullen, born January 30, 1940. on September 22, 1958. They are both
graduates of Silver City High School. In April of 1959 they purchased the
Charles Goodman home where they still reside.
Jerry is employed at United A.G. where he has worked for the last 20
years.
Jerry is a volunteer fireman and currently chairman of the volunteer
ambulance service. Jerry and Lucille are both Emergency Medical
technicians with the service.
They have two children Sharon Marie, born October 14, 1959. She is a
graduate of Glenwood Community High School and Iowa Western Community
College. She is currently employed at Central National Insurance Company
as a legal secretary.
Kenneth Lee born June 2, 1961, is a graduate of Glenwood Community High
School and is employed at Glenwood State Hospital School.
OAKS, WILLIAM
William Bosbyshell Oaks was born July 3, 1855 in Philadelphia, Pa. He came
to Mills County in 1869 and to Silver City in 1879 to manage the John
Hansen and Company General Store. He helped organize the Silver City State
Bank and was its first Cashier. Later he helped organize the Farmers State
Bank in 1908 and was cashier at the time of his death in November 3, 1909.
He was a charter member of I.O.O.F., Masonic, Wayside Encampement and K of
P of Silver City. He was also Mayor and President of Silver City Fair
Associate and Silver City Building and Loan Association. He married
September 28, 1881, Eda Crosby, daughter of W A. Crosby, who built the
first store building in Silver City and was its first postmaster. They had
no children. Mrs. Oaks died in Florida
