Harry served on the school board and city council. Maybelle was active in the Methodist Church including serving as the Supt. of Sunday School for many years.
The Adams family home is remembered by many of Ruth, Joann and David’s friends as a gathering place for cocoa and cookies after church activities, sleigh riding and school activities.
Harry was frequently willing to load up the young people into the back of the pick up to go out of town ball games regardless of the weather.
David, handicapped from birth, graduated valedictorian of his high school class, graduated
from Peru State College and worked at the Goodwill Industries until his health failed.
A favorite family story concerned an evening the Ord Brother’s grocery store was being robbed. David and his friends witnessed the robbery. David was posted as sentry to prevent the robbers from escaping while the others ran for help.

ANDERSON, FRANK W.
Frank W. Anderson was a prominent merchandiser in Silver City for most of his adult life. He was born in Sweden, one of seven children. Because of economic opportunities two of his brothers, Edward and Albert, had immigrated to the U.S. They settled in Glenwood and Council Bluffs areas as farmers. Their father had died and their mother realizing there was a better future for Frank made the sacrifice of putting him on a boat bound for the U.S. at age 13 in 1893. He was placed in the care of the captain with arrangements for him to go to Albert’s home. Frank lived with them until he learned English and could fend for himself. His first job was on the Wabash railroad. He became section foreman in the Silver City area. This is where he met his first wife. Their daughter, Helen, was a small child when her mother died. Frank entered the merchandising business selling and installing windmills in Silver City, then started a hardware store which eventually evolved into a general merchandise store including farm machinery and autos. In 1911 he married Etta VanKirk. She was an accomplished pianist, having graduated from the conservatory of music at Grinnell, Iowa. Etta was the daughter of Edward H. and Cecelia Frazier VanKirk. Mr. VanKirk was a prominent agriculturist and cattle feeder. He had come to the Silver City area in 1869 with his father’s family and settled on one of the oldest farms in the area. (See VanKirk).

ANDERSON, HARRY W.
Harry W. Anderson (b. Sept. 15, 1873 d. Oct. 25, 1960) was born in log cabin on Silver Creek but was raised to manhood in the home his father built just north of the Schultz place. The house was fashioned after the vintage of the H.H. Huffaker home and is still a very livable dwelling. Harry’s father, John W. Anderson, (b. July 5, 1834 d. Sept. 18, 1907) as a boy of fourteen years drove a dray team on the macadam streets of Chicago. He later owned a freight line from Chicago to St. Joseph, Missouri. Coonville (Glenwood) was a stop on the way and here he met Emily E. Dupray (b. Dec. 26, 1842 d. Nov. 5, 1923) whose parents, Hugh Dupray (1815-1892) and Mary A. Dupray (1824- 1884) were Inn Keepers. After their marriage, John and Emily purchased land in Pottawattamie County where he became a producer of fine Shorthorn cattle, shown locally and at the Chicago World’s Fair by Harry.
Harry’s first marriage was to Ethelind McElree, a fine equestrian of her day. Mildred Fern was born Oct. 11, 1901 and passed away Feb. 8, 1902. He later married Lyda Jackson Virtue. In 1914, when their daughter, Dorothy (b. May 9, 1913) was a year old, they moved to Silver City and built the house now owned by Richard Miller. Harry joined his father-in-law, J.C. Jackson, as a Mortician and also assisted him in the Livery business. They handled feeds and sold horses for a number of years until times decreed more speed. They purchased an open six-seated Ford to drive salesmen to near-by towns. Later they opened a General Store: The Silver City Produce Company, in partnership with Rowan Kurtz. When the depression hit they were forced to close the store but continued in produce, buying and selling chickens; they also served their community as Funeral Directors until their retirement. Harry was Master of Silver City Light AF and AM and served in the office of Mayor of Silver City in 1934. Harry and Lyda’s daughter, Dorothy now Mrs. Harry Gilmore resides on a farm near Glenwood. Her son, Ardath Anderson Long (b. April 1, 1932) passed away in 1947. Her daughter, Mrs. James Kinney, built a home southwest of her parents’ home on their farm and raises and shows quarter horses. Her husband, Jim, is a commercial salesman for RCA, selling TV and Telephone systems to Hotels and Motels. They have a small daughter, Shannon LeeAnn (b. April 22, 1977).

ANDERSON, HARRY W. - FAVORITE FAMILY STORIES
When we think of the sturdy stock from which we are descended, Harry Anderson loved to tell of his maternal Grandmother’s trip from Indiana with two fine stallions. She had gone home to visit her parents and while there rather than be defrauded of money owed to herself and her husband, she accepted the horses as pay. Riding one and leading the other, she made her way back to Iowa, often sleeping in the open. These stallions became the sires of many fine road horses owned by these early settlers north of Silver City. She and her husband owned a small farm later bought by the Waltrip family. They also ran the Inn on the Plumer place before John Anderson purchased forty acres for their retirement home.
Lyda Anderson remembers with pride a story from her mother’s childhood. Her mother, known to Silver City folks as Aunt Molly Denman Jackson, was attending school as a child near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. On the day of that fateful and historic battle in 1863, the teacher led her pupils out on a hillside where they could watch and see the fierce struggle and she knelt with them in Prayer; the teacher’s own brother was in the battle. One can well imagine the impression that such a sight and such an observance had on the youngsters that watched that day.
Another favorite story of Lyda’s was of a race in the days of the Silver City Fair Association 1892-1897, of which association her father, J.C. Jackson, was a member of the Board of Directors. J.C. entered a horse named “Lyda J,” trained and driven by Sid Sidener. She was matched against a fine grey gelding owned by Dr. Plimpton of Glenwood. Now, Uncle Sid, as he was affectionately called, was hard of hearing and could be heard all over town as he yelled encouragement to “Lyda J.” So on the day of the race at the Fair Ground, whether innocently or knowingly, each time the grey of Dr. Plimpton started to pass Lyda J, Uncle Sid let out a yell that made the grey break stride and lose ground. Needless to say that the betters on the home town horse were most happy with the outcome and Dr. Plimpton who had a far better, though high-strung horse, went home a puzzled and disappointed man.
