|Stewart Hellenbolt was born
in Toronto, Canada on January 29, 1825, the son of Dennis
and Catharine (Brown) Hellenbolt. He married Helen
McClintock Mitchell in Wisconsin and they removed to
Clayton county, Iowa. He and Helen were the parents of
three children. Stewart was a farmer, blacksmith and
horse doctor. Helen died May 13, 1902 and Stewart died on
March 13, 1913. They are buried in the Monona City
There are many stories as to why the 'H' was dropped from Hellenbolt, but the simplest is that Helen McClintock Mitchell Hellenbolt, wife of Stewart Hellenbolt, simply didn't want her name to begin with "Hell". Below is the grave marker for Helen McClintock Mitchell Hellenbolt in the Monona City cemetery. Note how the 'H' has been scratched off the marker making Hellenbolt 'Ellenbolt'.
