Samuel Brown
August 13, 1794 -  May 23, 1885
Samuel Brown was born in Antrim, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire on August 13, 1794, the first of eleven children born to John and Mirana Brown. By 1797 the family had moved to Vermont. At age twenty Samuel serviced in the War of 1812, enlisting on Sep. 9, 1814 as a Private in Captain Nathaniel Brown’s Company of Vermont Militia. He was discharged on Oct. 6, 1814.  On June 24, 1823 he married Louisa Ayers in Goshen, Orange County, Vermont. They had ten children, four boys - Orin, David, Stephen, and an unknown, and six girls - Harriet, Irena, Roxana, Lucinda, Almira & Alvira. The family moved to Harrison Township, Blackford County, Indiana in 1849. Samuel was a farmer. Before 1880 they moved to Montpelier, Blackford County, Indiana. Finally in 1882 Samuel and Louisa moved to Lohrville, Calhoun County, Iowa where Samuel died on May 23, 1885.  Louise lived in Lohrville with her daughter, Almira Parker. Samuel and Louisa are buried in the Evergreen Cemetery, Lohrville, Iowa.

Jared Calhoun
June 13, 1779 – February 21, 1879

Jared Calhoun was born in Kent, Litchfield County, Connecticut on June 13, 1779, the third child of Nathaniel and Abiah Calhoun. Jared moved to New York in 1797 and married about 1809 to Ann Eliza Davis in Jerusalem, Yates County, New York. During the War of 1812 Jared Calhoun served in a New York militia.  Jared and Ann had 8 children: 5 boys – Ezra, Hiram, Charles, John H., Isaiah, and 3 girls – Hannah, Lean and Rebecca. In 1864 Ann died and was buried in Luther Cemetery, Jerusalem, N.Y. Jared moved to Calhoun County, Iowa in 1869 to live with the family of his son, Charles.  In the 1870 federal census Charles’ family was living in Jackson Township, Calhoun County and Jared was age 91.  He died February 21, 1879 in Lake City, Iowa and was buried there in Cottonwood Cemetery.
