Dick,

This is Mike Altfillisch again. I notice that you made a comment that some Jackson County residents who were immigrants are described as being from Holland. This has always puzzled me. My great-grandfather and 9 of his siblings imigrated as adults from Germany. The place of birth was either Bayern ( Bavaria ) or Wurttemburg. THey all married people who spoke German. My grandfather and all of his cousins grew up speaking German. My great-grandfathers generation married people from a German state, Luxembourg and in one case Holland. The immigrants to Jackson County were overwhelmingly German speaking. I have begun to suspect that " Holland " in the census forms was liberally applied to anyone from the area; The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. The " Dutch " immigrants in Jackson County may, for the most part be Luxembourgers.
