We know that what gets recorded on records is not truth but whatever the recorder was told. His age on the marriage record may be the closest to the truth and he decided to change his "facts" for some unknown reason.

I looked at the transcriptions of the other birth records on that LDS film for Appanoose county in that time frame and most do have ages for parents. Transcribers are trained to only enter what they see. The way LDS works is that two different people transcribe the same record and only if they match is it posted online.

The only way to know is to look at the film and see the record. Since I volunteer at a Family History Center, and I'm sufficiently intrigued, I'll order the film and make a copy of the image of that birth record. If you can somehow send me an image of the record you've got, we can compare them and see why they're different. It will take me a month or more to get the film and look at it so take your time.

BTW - Mystic was the coal mining hub of Appanoose county. If you were a male over the age of 15, the odds were 20 to 1 that you were a coal miner. Of course some people were merchants to serve the mining population. Charles, if he abandoned his business as it appears he did, would probably not have been able to set up another business anywhere nearby. Coal mining would be the next option.
