Check to see where your document was issued. Since they were married in Mystic it might be an Appanoose County document. Their marriage license was issued in Wayne County, where I think Clara lived. That might explain the difference.

The place he listed as his birth location just adds to his mystery. He said Thornton Abbey in Devonshire. But when I google Thornton Abbey, it's located in Linconshire, way in the north of England. Devonshire is way in the southwest of England.

I searched every way I could using his birth year (1855 or 1856) and parents' names but couldn't come up with anything in England.
