Reponses to my original query about the cluster of families who emigrated in the 1850s from Monongalia County in [West] Virginia to Allamakee County are helping. Many thanks to all!
Many of these families are represented in the cemetery on my g-grandfather Calvin Augustus Robey's farm in Paint Creek township: the cemetery is sometimes called Maple Hill and sometimes Big Foot. The complete list of burials is available online at the Iowa Gravestone Photo Project and of course in Woodmansee at the Allamakee USGenWeb site.
My hope is to find out more about these families' relationships before they emigrated and especially more about why they all left Virginia when they did. I suspect that the great debate over slaveowning at the time was a factor.
I've located some relevant old postings on various bulletin boards, and I'm hoping to hear from more researchers in coming weeks. Any thoughts and information you have are welcome!
When I have assembled a fuller list of families and the many marriages among them before and after their move, I'll post my findings on this board.
