West Virginia - Allamakee migrations

I am a great-granddaughter of Calvin Augustus Robey and Isabel Dunn. Both were children of couples who migrated from Monongalia County in Virginia (later, West Virginia) to Allamakee County in the 1850s. The two families did not make the trip at the same time. I wonder if other families in Allamakee came from the same area of West Virginia, and I would like to know more about why these people left Virginia and chose Iowa.
