Menning family line

MENNING

My Menning line came over in the 1850's to Portage, Wisconsin from Germany, and then in 1870 to Franklin County, Iowa. I know the Mennings of western Iowa are of the same family; however they seem to be from Holland. Can someone explain the history of the family, the division between Holland and Bavaria, Germany? I at one time had contact with the Sioux County line but have lost contact. Any correspondence in regard to this would be appreciated.
