Since (I believe) Jones County marriages start in 1840, don't think the Green marriage in 1839 will show. It may have happened in NY or OH so I'll look there too. The date I came up with came from the IGI file which shows location of either/or Iowa or Wisconsin, another place to look.
I see your Paulina born c.1821 in Ohio with parents from NY, as a widow in Richland but also the marriage in 1857 to John Adams in Jones County.
Shows her widowed in the 1856 Richland census with all children born in IA: George W. (age 15), Joseph E. (age 15), John J. (age 11), Charly H. (age 8), Nathaniel N. (age 6), Hugh (age 3). Find the last child quite interesting since this indicates being the Hugh Bowen Jr especially if you add the age vs. Green's death in 1851. Hugh Bowen Jr. was born 1852. Obviously some cover-ups going on here.
There are several John Adams in the correct age range who could be the husband but all married. One is married to a Rebecca and living in Cedar Rapids and another is the Paulina and John Adams I found in Floyd County with her born c.1813. No children listed at home. As you mention, wonder if either (1) they divorced or (2) he died by 1880 and she went back to the Green name either way? Maybe some of the children's obits would give some clues. Any obits for her? At least we know of one child by Adams (Sylvester born c.1861)that married in Monticello 1896. Were both parents present for that marriage? He was also living in Monticello 1880 but have no idea when he died. Possibly his obit will give a clue as to where his father went to?
