Sandyville, was born Aug 11, 1819 in State of Virginia, became a permanent resident of this county in 1879; owns a farm of 120 acres of choice land, with improvements and in good state of cultivation. In 1842, Aug 11, he was married in Owen County, Indiana to Miss Sarah McHenry a native of that county. They have a family of 9 children - Montgomery, Mary (wife of G.G. Sandy), Thomas, Anna (now Mrs. Reynolds) of Marion County, Lizzie (now Mrs. Bare of Winterset), Minnie and Charles O., their third son, George A. died while in the army.

“Ray McCoy Dies Sunday After Long Illness” – Ray McCoy, 73, well-known hardware merchant, died Sunday, following a long illness. Services will be held Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the Peterson Funeral Home. Until his retirement in 1945 Mr. McCoy had been in hardware business since 1898. He first worked for Scott Noble who had the store now owned by Harold Pemble. Mr. McCoy had several partners during his life as a hardware merchant. He built the building which bears his name in 1918. He served on the Indianola school board and was active in politics. Surviving are his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Shanley of New York City, Mrs. John D. Kelley of Indianola, and one son, Richard of Indianola. He is also survived by four sisters, Mrs. Nellie, Miss Sara and Mrs. Gladys Moline of Chicago, Miss Kathryn of Des Moines, and three brothers, Joe, Richard, and Ivyl, all of Indianola.

Obituary of Frank A. Miller, oldest son of John H. & Ellen Miller born Princeville, Illinois Nov 9, 1867 – died May 29, 1950 at his home south of Hartford. At age of 4 came with parents to Iowa where they settled on a farm west of Palmyra. Spent his early life attending rural school near Palmyra and later attended Ackworth Academy. Married Oct 26, 1887 to Fannie Myrick, to whom two sons were born… Moved to farm south of Hartford where they have resided 62 years. Survived by 2 sons, a grandson, Lloyd D. “Mills to Begin A.F.L. Chief’s Duties Today” – Ray Mills, 48, of 1519 Osceola Ave., today assumed his duties as president of the Iowa State Federation of Labor. Mills, a Des Moines city councilman and park board member, succeeds A.A. Couch, whom he defeated in a close race at the federation convention in Cedar Rapids May 10^th. Couch, 63, also of Des Moines, had held the presidency for seven consecutive two-year terms. Mills said he would be at his new offices in the Paramount Building at 9 a.m.

Build Membership – “One of my first aims,” he said, “will be to build up membership of the federation.” Reports are that out of approximately 160,000 A.F. of L. union members in the state only about 50,000 are affiliated with the federation. Mills said he had had invitations to appear before a number of central A.F. of L. union bodies in the state and expected to visit them as soon as possible. He will be among state federation representatives at the American Federation of Labor convention in San Francisco, Cal., in September.

Teamster, President – Mills now is president of the Teamsters Joint Council No.45, of Des Moines and is secretary-treasurer and business representative of the Bakery Drivers Local 356, in Des Moines. He said it will be up to the executive board of Local 356 to arrange for someone to handle his work as business representative. Mills now is in the second year of a four-year term as councilman and said he expects to continue in that office. The park board post is appointive and he will continue in it if time permits. He was elected to the federation with backing from teamsters groups around the state. Couch was a typographical union member.

No objection to his being re-enlisted is known to exist. Said Arthur W. Monroe was born in Meigs Co. in the State of Ohio, is 20 years of age, Five feet six inches high, Dark complexion, Brown eyes, Brown hair, and by occupation, when enrolled, a Farmer. Given at Cartersville, Geo., this Fifth day of October 1864.

G.A.R. Des Moines, Iowa: I was in your office at the State House yesterday relative to a claim for accrued pension of Mary Jane Monroe, widow of Arthur W. Monroe, Private Co. K, 10^th Iowa Infantry Volunteers. At the time I was in your office I promised to send you an obituary of the deceased, and I herein enclose same. You promised to send me a blank to make application for accrued pension and I take it I will get same in next mail. You also gave me blank applications to apply for burial claim. I find that it will take a few days to get all the matters attended to for that purpose. When gathered together I am going to advise the claimant to go and see you and have you tell if they are properly filled out and executed. I feel certain that you will advise.
