From Personal Reminiscence:

First battle Chickasaw Bayou, lost first man, Isaac Yount, next Arkansas Post, took 1000 prisoners…. Champion Hill, Black River Bridge, Siege Vicksburg, Jackson, Mississippi – In Sept. 1863 went by boat to Memphis, Tenn., then by rail to Corinth, Miss., on foot to Woodville, Alabama, where we wintered.  In Spring 1864 went to Chattanooga, Tenn., engaged in that long hard battle, thence with Sherman in battle of Atlanta, GA., then long March to the Sea, then on longer march from Savannah, Georgia  to Washington.  Last engagement was Bentonville, N.C. – was in Columbia, S.C. when it was burned.  Took part in Grand Review, Washington, was mustered out there and paid off and turned over equipment at Davenport, Iowa.

Biography of Samuel M. Gwinn

Samuel McElheny Gwinn was born October 23, 1833 in Green Brier County, Virginia.  He was the son of Alexander and Mary (Gwinn) Gwinn.  He moved with his parents and three older sisters to Stony Creek Township, Madison County, Indiana in 1834.  His father died in 1835.  His widowed mother remarried on March 25, 1837 to James Freel and they had four daughters and two sons.  The mother died January 1, 1847 after giving birth to twins who survived.

Samuel McElheny Gwinn removed to Richland Township, Warren County, Iowa about 1857.  He was married at Hartford, Iowa on September 27, 1858 to Sarah Jane Shetterly.  Sarah Jane Shetterly was born January 22, 1835 in Madison County, Indiana.  She was the daughter of Samuel and Jane (Freel) Shetterly.  She moved with her parents and sister and three brothers to Richland Township, Warren County, Iowa in 1848.  Another sister and two more brothers were born here.

To the union of Samuel M. Gwinn and Sarah J. Shetterly were born probably seven children.  They were: (1) Ann M. Gwinn born 1860, (2) Cora May Gwinn born 1861, (3) Homer H. Gwinn born 1862, (4) William W. Gwinn born 1867, (5) a daughter who married Leo J. Thomas, (6) Jessie Gwinn, (7) a daughter born August 3, 1878 died August 11, 1878

Samuel McElheny Gwinn died August 13, 1911, Sarah Jane Gwinn died May7, 1911
