History

One bright sunny morning, August 27, 1945, to be exact, seven bright, green boys and girls came up to take their seats in the assembly of T.H.S. to start their high school career. They were: Evelyn DeVRIES, Charlotte PETERSOHN, Marilyn KESTER, Harold GROUT, Avery WOOLLUMS, Donald NEFF, and Byron BENDER. Our teachers were: Mrs. Gladys KIBURZ, Superintendent; Howard VERPLOEGH, coach; Beulah KESTER, and Gladys LUPHER. On Friday night, September 15, we were thoroughly initiated and brought in as members of the Tingley High School.

The tenth year opened with many of the same teachers and all of the students back. Our teachers were: Mrs. Gladys KIBURZ, Superintendent; Howard VERPLOEGH, coach; Beulah KESTER; and Miss Vera GUSTAFSON, commercial. This year was very uneventful so we passed on as fast as possible to our Junior year.

Our Junior year brought forth many activities and by this time we were really getting into the swing of things and were flying on high. On October 9, we presented our class play, "Two Days To Marry," before a capacity crowd. In the spring we began work on the Junior-Senior banquet and what work, but we were fully repaid, by, "A Cruise to Hawaii," on April 22. We also want to thank our mothers for preparing the food and Howard VERPLOEGH for his time and help. Just getting the banquet over we started learning how to serve, again so that we could serve at the alumni banquet. This event occurred on the last night of the school year so our school year was ended very well. This year we lost two members of our class, Byron BENDER who moved to Afton and Evelyn DeVRIES who decided life for two was more interesting than for one, and became Mrs. Keith VAN SICKLE.

Our Senior year started off with a bang with five dignified Seniors and a whole new faculty. They were: Mr. McGINNESS, Superintendent; Mr. FINDLEY; and Mrs. FINDLEY. This was our year to initiate the school members so boy did we put them through the works. After the semester ended we began eagerly on our Senior activities. First among these was the Senior class play, "Have A Heart," which we had a lot of fun working on and which was a huge success. By this time the year is about complete and our Commencement week is now outlined. This week includes Baccalaureate on Sunday night, May 8, at the Methodist church, the big night of Commencement, Thursday night, May 12 at the Community Hall, and to finish our days together, the Alumni Banquet, Friday night, May 13, at the Legion Hall.

Thus ends our school days together and we are bid farewell by teachers and friends. We as a class have had many troubles and also good times but through our teachers we have proved to be worthy and are now ready to try to help make our world a better world and live up to our motto, "B2 and be Y's".

Prophecy

After graduating from High School, I attended college four years and graduated as a Home Economics major. After my graduation I went to Denver where I worked as a dietitian in the Old Soldier's Home. After being there about a month, one day I received a note, that I was to report at my counselor's office at my earliest convenience. This alarmed me of course for I was afraid that my work had not been satisfactory but to follow orders I went to the office at 2:00 that afternoon. When I arrived I was met by a receptionist who took me immediately into the office. When I stepped into the office and met my counselor for the first time, was I surprised. He was none other than my old classmate, Harold GROUT. While talking over old acquaintances and old times I learned that Harold had attended Iowa University for two years and had then got a chance at this present job as head counselor, so he came west. He reported that he liked his job very well and to make a long talk short the reason I had been called in was to get acquainted with my counselor, and of course we did a good job of it. As I was leaving his office we promised that we should see each other again soon and bring back more of our old memories. Just a few days later I received a phone invitation from Harold for dinner the following Sunday. About a year passed and I was well on my way to success, at least according to my counselor. And now that we were both doing so well and of course had seen a lot of each other in a year, one night when we were spending the evening in my apartment he popped the question and in September we were happily married. We are now living in a little mansion, to our estimation, on Washington Boulevard, and this year I received a months vacation with pay so I now have my suitcase packed and am ready to start my merry way.

My first stop was in Houston, Texas and the first night as I was out sight seeing I decided to attend a movie. While I was standing in line for my ticket I saw a card headed man, up in front of me with a dark haired girl and on looking closer I recognized an old classmate, Avery WOOLLUMS. I pushed my way up and after my ten years of age, well he didn't recognize me, so I had to introduce myself. He then introduced me to his sweet little wife, the former Shirley KASTER of Mount Ayr. After their graduation and a year of romance they had been happily married and went to Texas to buy a ranch. When they got there they settled on a six-hundred-forty acre ranch just out of Houston. They now have two children, Marie and Tommy, who really entertained me during my visit to the ranch.

After leaving the Houston ranch I traveled to Washington, D.C. where I was met by another classmate, Charlotte PETERSOHN. After graduation she had gone to the Kathryn GIBB's secretarial school and then got a job as secretary with the FBI. It seemed that for several years the schoolwork and job had kept her tied down so much that she hadn't gotten to see many sights or meet many people of the opposite sex, or shall I say men. As I was boarding the train on Friday night after a week's visit she let me in on a little secret which I shall relate here. Just lately the work had eased up slightly and she had had more leisure time and guess what. About two months before, one night when she was attending a big dance in Washington, who did she meet but Lyle MINNICK, her old high school sweetheart. And to finish the story just as the train started to pull away she yelled, "Come back June 1st and attend our wedding, goodbye!"

Charlotte's last statement had got me so that I had practically forgotten where I was headed for when the conductor came by and asked, but finally I came too enough to tell him my next stop was at Tingley. You may wonder why I come to stop there but that was where I had graduated, at good old Tingley High and one of my classmates, Donald NEFF, was scientifically operating a farm there. (I hear he has been putting some of our Agriculture teacher's ideas to work, to a good advantage of course.) When I arrived in Tingley I was unable to find where the NEFF farm was, you see Tingley had grown to be about the biggest town in Iowa and no one knew anybody else, but finally I ran across Mr. McGINNESS, our 1949 Superintendent (incidentally he is still teaching in Tingley) who directed me to the NEFF farm. When the taxi dropped me at the doorstep and I took a gander about me, boy I was about ready to move to the farm. During my visit with Donald I came to the conclusion that he had everything a farmer needed, except a wife. When I asked him why he didn't have that he said he had spent all his money fixing up the farm and didn't have enough left to get a license. He said that he now had eight of the ten dollars he needed saved so it wouldn't be long until his farm would be complete, wife and all. Donald wouldn't tell me who the lucky girl was but said as soon as they could manage they would take an extended trip and visit all of his dear old classmates.

From Tingley I journeyed back to Denver where I was met by my husband and classmate. Of course he had been working hard during my absence so I promised that he should take a trip next year while I stayed at home and worked.

After my trip and visits with all my old classmates I believe that the old Class of '49 has done pretty well, in this great world. For much of our accomplishment we wish to thank our teachers and parents who have helped us so much in receiving an education.

FAREWELL

We, the Senior Class of forty-nine
All our trials and triumphs sublime,
Have here at last, on this great day,
Come to the end, to start our way,
Out into the world great and fine.

We, the very small number of five,
May be droopy but yet much alive,
Our records both, those good and bad,
From the big books they may be had,
And forth from these we must live and thrive.

Some are athletic, others are not,
A few could sing, they had always thought,
So out for glee club they did go,
Some advanced others lingered low,
But finally all did upward trot.

Other activities we have tried
Some were ample, others cut and dried,
Many they were, varied in type,
Plays, club work, writing, and some tripe,
Many a time we have laughed or sighed.

After coming this far we shall now
Be made to find our way and learn how,
To make ourselves so great or small
That fame or sorrow on us will fall,
To make us equal what we shall vow.

As we sail on we bid our farewell,
To each and every one we will tell,
"Fare thee well and good luck to all,
For those who will sail on or fall
We wish you all the same, 'Farewell'".

-Marilyn KESTER

CHUCKLES

Father: "Yes, my boy, I'm a self-made man."
Son: "Gee, Pop, that's what I admire about you. You always take the blame for everything."

Veteran: "Yep, once I put almost three hundred men out of action."
Admiring youngster: "My, didn't you get a medal?"
Veteran: "No, I was a camp cook."

A doctor attended an old lady who had caught a severe cold.
"Did your teeth chatter when you felt the chill coming over you?"
"I don't know, doctor, they were lying on the table."

The newly married couple stopped in a local restaurant and after their meal a waiter asked:
"Is there anything else?"
"Yes," replied the bridegroom, "bring us a honeymoon salad."
"Beg your pardon sir," said the waiter, "but what is a honeymoon salad?"
"Lettuce alone."

Man Instructor (to new girl): "I'm putting this rivet in the correct position. When I nod my head, hit it hard with your hammer."
That's all he remembered until he woke up in a hospital.

The deacon was passing the plate in church when a woman hurried in, sat down, and put a coin in the plate as he passed her. By the time he reached the rear of the church, the woman came bustling past, grabbed her coin out of the plate, and rushed for the door. Surprised, the deacon dashed after her.
"Look here," he said, "why do you come in here, drop a
coin on the plate, take it out again, and leave?"
The woman shook him off indignantly. "I'm in the wrong church," she said.

Out for a drive in her pony-cart, an elderly lady managed to get involved in some army maneuvers. As she approached a bridge a sentry stopped her.
"Sorry, madam," he said, "you can't cross this bridge. It's just been destroyed."
The old lady peered at it through her spectacles.
"It looks all right to me," she murmured. Then, as another soldier came along, she asked:
"Excuse me, but can you tell me what's wrong with this bridge?"
The soldier shook his head.
"Don't ask me, lady," he replied: "I've been dead two days."

A nut at the wheel, a peach in his arms, the car makes a turn - fruit salad!

It takes face powder to get a man - baking powder to keep him.
