In memory of Bonnie Berlee BROWN whose untimely death on
Dec. 14, 1937 [sic, should be Dec. 21] is deeply mourned by her classmates.

Dedicated to the Tingley Public School whose doors are opened wide each year beckoning little children to enter the halls of learning and bidding farewell to the students who must go their own individual ways of the world.

Senior Class Poem

The Senior Class of '40
Are descending on life's road
Now it's up to them
What they choose for their abode.

Life is full of hard knocks
For which we have to prepare
We don't want to be napping
And let them catch us unaware!

We'll meet all sorts of people
Some good, some bad, 'tis true
We'll see some with that beaten look
He's had some hard knocks too.

Life is what we make it;
We know the wrong from right,
If we're working towards a goal
We won't give in without a fight.

We had a pleasant journey
All these years in school,
But now are going into life
Where we're governed by stronger rule.

Every class has a motto
Which it relies upon,
Though our school life may be over,
It's "Not Evening, But Dawn."

We, the Senior Class of nineteen hundred and forty, the party of the first part,
in our last will and testimony, do bequeath all our valuable possessions, intelligence, attractiveness, advantages, and ability to the party of the second part, the forth coming seniors.

The Senior Class wills to Darold BLAUER the Bakery on Apple Tree Lane.

Waye MORRISON wills to Howard SWANSON her chewing gum wads that are stuck under her desk.

The Senior Class wills to Miss BRADLEY some of the forth coming Seniors, such as Lola and Hester, to prepare for the hard year ahead of them.

Mr. SAVILLE wills his ability as a smith in making over students to Miss HEATON who is interested in the smith industry.

The Senior Class wills to Mrs. WORLEY all the typing budgets that they carelessly completed this year. This includes all errors made also.

The Senior Class as a whole wills all the jokes that Mr. WORLEY has cracked in class back to him.

La Vern MARLER wills to Miss EIGHME all his art ability which should be as good as new because it has never been used.

The Class is no longer responsible for the above statements which have been read.

If there are no objections this will stands approved as read. If there are objections, they must be filed with mayor of Tingley on or before 12:00 noon on Friday, April 19, 1940.

Seventeen, bashful, green freshman found their way up the stairs of Tingley High School in September 1936. When these bashful freshman saw the great big assembly they thought they were lost, and wondered what was going to happen to them. These seventeen freshman: Naomi WEEDA, Phyllis MORRISON, Waye MORRISON, Doris WERNER, Rosetta RUSH, Berlee BROWN, Howard SWANSON, Warren GILES, La Vern MARLER, Harold BALL, Jeannie BRECKENRIDGE, Louise SMITH, Nellie GROSE, Mac BEEN, Marabelle BEEN, Reva ESTEL, and Kenneth McCOWEN struggled through one year together. These coutry girls Naomi, Phyllis, Waye, Doris, Rosetta, and Berlee looked like green horns. Howard, Warren, and La Vern were three little bashful country boys who had just woke up from a good night's sleep.

After going through one year together some of our classmates decided our school was not good enough for them, and some from other schools thought Tingley might be the best. We had the sad news of Berlee BROWN'S death, which took one of our dear classmates away from us. Reva decided this climate was too hot and dry for her, so she went up North where the roses always bloom. Mac BEEN decided we were too smart for him, so he quit school to help his dad cut hair. Marabelle BEEN thought life would be much better in Des Moines around the Capital, so she quit school and went to work where all the sick people go. Nina BUTTERFIELD joined our class and finished the sophomore year with us but decided that married life suited her best. Robert McGEHEE found that Tingley was the town with all the pretty girls so he joined our class as a sophomore. Opal HILLEBRAN transferred schools from Beaconsfield to Tingley and was a welcome classmate.

Marjorie ELLISON also joined our class in the sophomore year but did not stay long.

Fifteen students enrolled in with the Jolly Juniors. Rosetta RUSH decided to finish her high school career at Mount Ayr. George MATHES joined the Junior class but difficulties arose and he was forced to quit. Howard SWANSON was forced to leave school in the middle of the year because of an infected knee. Kenneth McCOWEN went to Clarinda.

By the time we were dignified seniors our class was much smaller. Robert McGHEE due to an accident, was unable to be with us in our senior year. Doris WERNER was married. Paul BUCK joined our class and was graduated at the end of the first semester. 10 Seniors were graduated on May 17, 1940.

The Senior Class presented a three act comedy of life. "Baby Steps Out" directed by Mrs. John B. Worley, on Friday evening, May 10, at 8:00 o'clock F. Me at the theatre.

The Junior & Senior Banquet was held at the school house, April 19th.

The theme of the banquet was based upon the seniors coming to Honolulu on the ship T. H. S. Dawn.

The President of the Senior class introduced each member of the class, and the will, prophecy, and history were read. Then the Juniors were introduced, and they gave a short program of Hawaiian music.

After the banquet every one went to Creston to attend the show.

 

The Junior play, "Hobgoblin House" a mystery comedy, was given October 13, 1939, in the theater building.

The students cast were: Howard SWANSON, Hester HENDERSON, Lola BLUNCK, Gale SMITH, Ardena EIGHME, Paul KIRBY, Leo GUESS, Berniece GARLAND, Louise LONGCOW, Duane ROUSH, and Darold BLAUER.

The play was directed by Miss Phylis WILLIAMS.

Out of the eleven boys in the Sophomore Class:
Seven members are on the track team.
Five members are on the basketball team.
Five members are on the baseball team.
Two members are in band.
Two members are in boys Glee Club.

Out of the four girls of the Sophomore Class:
Three members are on the pep squad.
Two members are in the Girls Gleed Club and Mixed Chorus.

The Sophomore Class had a party on Friday Night, the 26th of April, 1940. Each member of the class invited a guest.

The refreshment committee served lunch of sandwiches, ice cream and cake in the upper hall. They arranged tables in a square with four guests at each table. Candles lighted and decorated the tables during the refreshment hour.

The Sophomore Class has sponsored a school paper during the school year of
1940. We have printed three different editions of the Tingley School news.

It included high school news, grade news, and all activities that were of
interest to the school.

The school annual was the final journalistic feature of the year.

A freshman leap year party was held at the school house April 10th, at 7:30 P.M. The eventing was very well spent by playing games, and afterwards refreshments consisting of sandwiches and whipped cream on vanilla wafers were served.

The seventh and eighth grade students participated int he reading and spelling contest. Dorine MANBECK won first and Edwin VERPLOEGH second.

Dorine MANBECK represented our room at the Mount Ayr in both he reading and spelling contests.

Both grades have completed history projects, taken imaginary trips in geography and organized a "Good English Club". They have also organized a Verse Speaking Choir. Charts have been made to illustrate points of interest in literature, health, and nature study.

Some of the outstanding interest this year were a bird and bee unit in science, a picture show of an Abraham Lincoln story in art, rhythm band topped the interest in music, and in language a Thanksgiving play using Pilgrim characters was written and presented.

This year has been a new phase of life for the ones in the primer grade. They have been learning to work in a social group as well as learning to read and write.

The first and second grades have taken a noticeable climb in the world of learning. Their marked interest in the science shows they are fitting into the world about them.

Due to the fact that most of our players graduated our leaders have been trying to build up a squad for next year. The first team was not successful this year, but the second had a victorious season.

The team competed in three tournaments: namely, the Five-mile Conference, in which we received a consolation trophy; the County Tournament; and the Section Tournament.

Track is our principal sport this spring. It is a new event to the students who are in school, although it was featured several years ago.

Baseball was our sport in the fall.

The improvement in the musicianship of the band members this year is worthy of note. The genuine interest and cooperative attitude has enabled the sponsoring of three musical concerts during the school term for the entertainment of the community.

The clarinet quartette consists of Duane ROUSH, Opal HILLEBRAN, Lucy WEEDA, and Dorine MANBECK. The group was chosen as a quartette from the clarinet section of the band by the director, J.B. WORLEY.

The quartette has been requested to play on many programs such as the School Masters Club in Mount Ayr, Community Club at Shannon City, P.T.A. programs, local church program, etc.

The group entered Class B,C,D, Clarinet Quartette group, District Music Contest at Mount Ayr Iowa, and received a Superior rating, which entitled them to go to the State Music Contest at Fairfield, Iowa, where they received a "Good" rating.

Paul KIRBY received a "Good" rating in the District Contest as a trombone soloist.

Members of the sextette are: Roberta JOHNSTON, Lola BLUNCK, Louise LONGCOY, Jean BRECKENRIDGE, Berneice GARLAND, and Ardena EIGHME.

The girls sextette under the direction of Miss RUSK, vocal instructor, has appeared on many programs during the year.

The sextette received a "Second Rating" at the District Music Contest at Mount Ayr.

Jean BRECKENRIDGE received a second rating as mezzo-soprano soloist at the District Contest and Roberta JOHNSTON was given the same rating as an alto soloist. Ardena EIGHME was the soprano soloist.

Rhythm Band
Rhythm band is a new activity. The first, second, third, and fourth grades are eligible for membership. It is of value in creating interest and rhythm in music.

Intermediate Group
This group studied kinds of music, note value, rhythm, and two-part singing.

Junior High
The seventh and eighth grade received instruction in fundamentals and music appreciation.

Cheer Leaders were Rosemari BAKER and Duane ROUSH. The members of the squad were: Hester HENDERSON, Marilyn BEEN, Roberta JOHNSTON, Pauline HILLEBRAN, Lucy WEEDA, Agnes SWANSON, Barbara HOOVER, and Jean BRECKENRIDGE.

The pep squad was elected by the school faculty. The selected the girls that they thought could attend the basketball games, track meets, etc.

Every member of the pep squad enjoyed encouraging the boys to help bring victory to their school, and they never let their cheers die down in defeat. During the last year they have made up several songs and yells.

The high school students who entered the declamation contest were: Russell BOYD, Hester HENDERSON, Paul KIRBY, Nellie GROSE, Lee MAINARD and Roberta JOHNSTON. Miss Phyllis WILLIAMS sponsored the contest.

Mrs. J.B. WORLEY judged the local contest on November 23, 1939. Russell BOYD won the oratorical contest; Hester HENDERSON, humorous reading; and Roberta JOHNSTON, dramatic reading.

In the district contest on December 6, 1939, Russell BOYD and Hester HENDERSON won second in their respective groups, Roberta JOHNSTON with a first rating went to Leon do compete in the sectional contest, where she won second.

School Carnival
The school carnival was held in the gymnasium on September 27, 1939. The carnival Queen and King;
Louise LONGCOY and Duane ROUSH, were chosen by popular vote. A sideshow consisting of tap-dancing, singing by the girls sextette, and town girls' glee club, and a concert by the band was given in the auditorium before the carnival began. Entertaining games were engaged in: bingo, baseball, basketball fishing for prizes and bridge playing. Candy, gum, apples and refreshments of all kinds could be bought.

Sermons
On Monday mornings a fifteen minute sermon was brought to the students by one of the three local ministers on the "Parables".

Freshmen Initiation
The freshmen initiation was held on Friday, September 15, 1939. The day was full of laughs and cheers. The four green freshmen girls were: Marilyn BEEN, Lucy WEEDA, Pauline LAIRD, and Barbara HOOVER. They dressed as "little girls" in short dresses with their hair tied in pigtails decorated with ribbons.

The girls were only half of the fun; the boys, Dean GARLAND, Raymond BALL, Russell BOYD, Harold SMITH, Floyd BORRUSH, Donald GROUT were dressed as "little boys". Their trousers were turned wrong side out, the legs of the trousers were rolled up to their knees. These boys were made up to look like Indians.

The student body voted Barbara HOOVER and Floyd BORRUSH the most natural acting and looking "little girl" and "little boy" of the initiation.
