MAC students to district large group speech contest
Four MACHS large group teams heading to state
Four Mount Ayr teams qualified for the state large group speech contest following district competition

State competition will be held February 2 at Waukee.
The Mount Ayr speech team advanced four events to the state large group speech contest after district
competetion last week end. Those advancing to state included: Group improvisation team of Johnathan TRIGGS,
Braydee POORE,Jacob SOBOTKA and Matt POORE. The boys' situation was "finding what was lost." The judge said the
boys "had good scene development taking a 'vague' scene and turning it into something specific." He also said
they developed their characters well. Group improvisation team consisted of Taylor STILL, Maggie JENNETT,
Allison WALLACE, Tyler TRIGGS and Hagan WILLIS. Their scene was "wrestling alligators." Tyler TRIGGS was the
alligator. The judge stated the kids had "good energy," and she "enjoyed it a lot!" The ensemble acting
team of Caitlin GILES and Emily FOX also advanced to state. This is the first year the girls have gone out
for speech. Their piece, "Dear John," was well received by the judge. He stated the girls did a "very nice
job with initial characterization - large personalities." The MKIS radio broadcast team of Taylor STILL,
Allison WALLACE, Maggie JENNETT, Matt POORE, Leah KLEJCH, Ica HAUGE and MaKayla O"MAILIA are advancing
to state. The judge said the kids had "good enthusiasm throughout" and the broadcast was "easy to follow and
listen to."Also participating, but unfortunately not advancing on to state was the group improvisation team
of Caitlin GILES, Emily FOX and Lew KNAPP. Their scene was "washing windows 80 floors up." The judge said the
kids had "nice facial expressions and were fun to watch with lots of energy." "Sniper Games," the short film by
Lew KNAPP and Wyatt JACKSON, also received a II rating. The judge said the boys had lots of "interesting
shots and angles and had good choice of sound effects and costuming." Those advancing to state will go to
Waukee on February 2.

Speech team does well at state meet
The Mount Ayr speech team travelled early Saturday morning to Waukee for the state speech contest. Performing
first was the radio broadcast of Taylor STILL, Maggie JENNETT, Allison WALLACE, Leah KLEJCH, Matt POORE, Ica
HAUGE and MaKayla O'MAILIA. The judges said that the students had a very creative commercial, did an excellent
job on transitioning from piece to piece and all the speakers came across as knowledgable. The team received
two I ratings from two of the judges, and a II rating from one judge for an overall I rating. Next up was
the group improvisation team of Taylor STILL, Maggie JENNETT, Allison WALLACE, Hagan WILLIS and Tyler TRIGGS.
Their situation was on a cross country car trip. The judges stated that the team worked well together, had a
nice balance of characters presented and had good thought behind roles and actions. The team received I ratings
from all three judges for an overall I rating. The ensemble acting team of Caitlin GILES and Emily FOX
performed at the same time as the group improv. This was the girls' fist year in speech contest. The
judges said that their characters were developed, they had good volume and had good interaction between
their characters with well-established relationships. The girls received II ratings from all three judges
for an overall II. The last performance of the day was the group improvisation team of Braydee POORE,
Johnathan TRIGGS, Jacob SOBOTKA and Matt POORE. The boys performed the situation, "Bathing a Reluctant
Dalmation." Jacob SOBOTKA was the dalmation. The judges said that the boys' story line was good, and
they had good physical interactions and facial expressions. The boys received a II rating from two of
the judges and a I rating from one judge for an overall II rating. "It was a good day," said coach Shaun
KNIEP. "I am very proud of all the kids for their fine performances."
