Weehler earns spot on Iowa high school rodeo team

Riley WEEHLER, a freshman at Mount Ayr Community high school, has earned a position on the Iowa high school rodeo team and will be traveling with fellow teammates to Rock Springs, WY from July 15-21 to compete at the 64th annual National High School Finals Rodeo in the team roping competition.

To qualify for the nationals, WEEHLER and his partner Payden DAWSON of Maryville, MO, finished third in points for the year in team roping. WEEHLER also placed seventh in calf roping in season points.

The top four places for the season advance to the nationals.

WEEHLER also was named the rookie cowboy of the year for the state association, which means he earned more points than any other freshman boy this year.

Featuring over 1,500 contestants from 41 states, five Canadian provinces and Australia, the National High School Finals is the world's largest rodeo. In addition to competing for over $200,000 in prizes, NHSFR contestants will also be competing for more than $350,000 in college scholarships and the chance to be named the National High School Rodeo champion. To earn this title, contestants must finish in the top 20 after two go-rounds of intense competition before advancing to the final championship performance.

Some of the competition will be shown on RFD-TV.

Along with great rodeo competition and the chance to meet new friends from around the world, NHSFR contestants have the opportunity to represent their team in a volleyball tournament, enjoy nightly contestant dances, participate in a talent contest, compete in an NRA rife shooting competition, test their skills in a knowledge bowl competition, have the chance to shop the NHSFR western trade-show and visit the historical attractions of the cowboy state.
