Mount Ayr Community high school's annual homecoming festivities got underway in earnest today with the theme "MACHS
Tops the Charts." Candidates for homecoming queen, chosen by the senior class, include Terrinda KLOMMHAUS, Debbie REED,
Lisa BARKER, Shawn GEORGE and Susan SMITH. Candidates for homecoming king include Mike COMBS, Billy HINGELEY, Larry
JARRED, Mike WIMER and John CLARK.
David NEAS, a Mount Ayr attorney, was elected to the board of directors of the Green Valley Area Education Agency during
a director district conventionheld Thursday, Sept. 21, in Mount Ayr.
It took three motions before a majority of the city council could agree on the motion they felt was best but the sale
of the alley near the new Southern Iowa Regional Housing Authority project in Mount Ayr was sold to SIRHA at a
special meeting of the Mount Ayr city council Monday night.
Helen CAMPBELL, a familiar face for many years at the Mount Ayr Hy-Vee, retired after being an outstanding member
of their team for 25 years.
Thousands of visitors are expected to descend on Graceland College in Lamoni Oct. 1-3 to witness the opening
ceremonies of a fine arts complex, The Shaw Center. This center, at a cost of $4.3 million, represents new vistas
of cultural enrichment in south central Iowa.
Dan CUNNING of Mount Ayr, who has served on the board of the Green Valley Area Education Agency since its
organization, was honored during a meeting of the board of directors in Creston Monday. CUNNING and Larry O'NEALL of
Murray, who also was not seeking another term on the board, received plaques recognizing their service to the board.
The First Christian Church of Mount Ayr will observe its 100th anniversary on Sunday, October 3, with special
services marking the date.
Oldest and youngest of the hikers who made the full eight miles during the CROP walk held in Ringgold county Sunday
were Melissa BINNING of Grand River, who is seven, and Earl KELLY of Redding who is 77. The barometer representing
contributions was on its way to the $2,000 mark at this point Sunday afternoon.
"Australia is not all kangaroos and koalas," says 18-year-old Megan DAVIS, who has come to Mount Ayr from Sydney,
Australia. She is spending the year with her host family, the SCHAFERS, which includes Bob, Wilma and May.
Life Investors of America announces the appointment of Lloyd DRAKE as their representative in the Mount Ayr area.
DRAKE has 18 years experience in the insurance field.
Miracle Recreation of Mount Ayr made its usual "off season" layoff of employees Sept. 17 as 10 staff members left
their jobs producing play equipment for McDonald's restaurants. This leaves 33 employees. When the plant is in full
production there are 54 working there.
The district cubmobile races were held on Monroe Street in Mount Ayr Sunday. Cub Scout Pack 165 hosted the district
meet which had 20 entries from Creston, Lenox, Diagonal and Mount Ayr. Ken TUCKER, the district leader, recognized
the top five winners and presented participation awards to everyone. Winners were first, Spencer ADAMS of Lenxo;
second, Cory WILLIS of Mount Ayr; third, Ron SCHAFER of Mount Ayr; fourth, Marty MOE of Mount Ayr; and, fifth,
Peter HEINTZ of Diagonal.
