A storm front Monday afternoon blew down a shed at the Bert DRAKE farm two miles north and a quarter mile east of
Blockton and sightings by the public of what was described as funnel clouds brought a tornado warning to the
county about 2 p.m. Memorial Day. Funnel clouds were also noted inthe Diagonal and Grand River areas. The only damage
reported in Ringgold county was at the DRAKE farm, where a shed was bown over by what Bert DRAKE described as
straight winds. The National Weather Service did not have radar indications of tornado clouds but everyone agreed
that there was some heavy weather in the area.
Raider sophomore Casey SMITH cleared 6'2" in the state Class 2A boys track meet in Des Moines Saturday to give the
Mount Ayr Community Raiders their only placing, a third place. SMITH almost cleared 6'4" level in the less than ideal
conditions that the top two finishers made.
Mount Ayr American Legion Unit 172 and Auxiliary will be sponsoring three Mount Ayr Community high school juniors at
boys and girls state this year. Attending will be Brooke MITCHELL, daughter of Steve and Cindy MITCHELL of Mount Ayr.
This year's Mount Ayr Legion delegates will be Eric MATHANY, son of Mary Ann MATHANY of Mount Ayr, and Jamie KING,
son of Ross and Gerry KING of Mount Ayr.
A young Mount Ayr fisherman made quite a haul on a fishing trip recently in southwest Iowa. Dustin PHERIGO of Mount
Ayr hooked an eight pound, two ounce catfish that measured 30 inches long. PHERIGO is a fifth grader at Mount
Ayr Community elementary school.
A former Ringgold county pastor has a new pastorate. The Rev. James F. SCHUTTER of Davenport has been named pastor of
the Somers united Methodist Church and the Farnhamville United Church effective June 30.
