RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, April 30, 1987

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

In her first visit to the United States, Erika FRITZ, mother of Mount Ayr Community exchangee from Germany, Folkard FRITZ, is realizing a dream. She also is getting a chance to see where her son is attending school this year and to meet his hosts, the Phil KINTON family, and his friends.

Marjorie "Marge" McFARLAND has weathered "stopping and starting" as she pursued a four-year college degree. She endured the rigors of school reorganization with its varied room and building assignments. Marge is retiring this year from 30 years of teaching lower elementary children -- two years at Benton Independent and 28 years at Mount Ayr Community, where she taught third grade this past year. Marge graduated from Benton high school in 1939 and was to have two years at what is now Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, MO. Then she married John McFARLAND, a Mount Ayr native, who was a teacher and coach at Redfield.

Mount Ayr's newest business owner is Cindy DUGAN, who recently purchased the former Cyndi's Beauty Center from Cut and Curl. Members of the Mount Ayr Resource Commission welcomed DUGAN in a ribbon cutting ceremony during the new business' open house Wednesday.

There were three Diagonal students -- Heather CLARK, Phillip HOOD and Kerri HOWLAND -- who placed in a Green Valley Area Education Agency, Area 14, original bookmark contest. The event promoted National Library Week April 5-11. The children were to use their favorite book, character, author or a catchy slogan or graphic to encourage reading.

Everyone's a winner in the Special Olympics program, and a number of area youth found that out at Creston Saturday. Participants were Robert MEDLEY, Scott FARRELL, Chris MEDLEY, John MEDLEY, Lance ENGLAND and Mike KING. Mike KING participated in the 25-yard event and won a first place.

A $19,000 loss in chemicals was reported at the Benton Coop, thought to have been taken sometime in the early morning April 25. The loss was reported by manager Tracey CAMERON. An investigation by the Ringgold County sheriff's office is continuing.
