Raider Blake HAUGLAND became the sixth wrestler in Mount Ayr Community high school wrestling history to make it to the
finals of the state wrestling tournament. HAUGLAND
ended up in second place at 171 pounds, joining four other Raiders who have placed second in the state tournament.
Size of the Gooseberry Lake appears to be growing, though a final decision on lake size was not made at the February
meeting of the Gooseberry Lake Agency board of directors. A subcommittee of agency directors took a look at lake size
a ta meeting in Creston recently and proposed that the final lake size be increased to 565 acres - larger than the
509-acre lake being contemplated earlier.
Mekenze BISHOP of Mount Ayr was crowned Ringgold county beef queen for 2002 by 2001 beef queen Landi McFARLAND at the
annual banquet of the Ringgold County Cattlemen and Cattlewomen held in Mount Ayr.
Mount Ayr Community students headed on to the state speech contest after receiving division I ratings at the district
contest are Amanda HYNEK, Kelsey ALLEN and Sean KILGORE.
Diagonal students who received division I ratings at
the district individual speech contest and advanced on to state included Abby STEPHENS, Alex STEPHENS and Adam AUTEN.
Two Ringgold county producers had winners in the Angus show at the 2002 Iowa Beef Expo Angus Show and sale Wednesday,
Feb. 13, in Des Moines. Robert JOHNSON of Tingley showed the reserve grand champion bull at the show. B JStockman,
251-647, a December 2000 son of Century Stockman 251, first won senior bull calf champion before getting reserve honors.
In addition, Werner Eileen 520 shown by Jim and Ann WERNER of Diagonal received reserve junior champion heifer honors at
the show.
Ryan KING of Mount Ayr has been invited to receive the 2001 Trophy Buck Print Award at the 27th Annual Eastern Iowa
Sportshow scheduled for March 15-17 at the Uni-Dome in Cedar Falls. RYAN harvested a deer in Ringgold county. It scored
151 7/8 points in the Shotgun-Typical category.
The Revs. Art and Nan ALLEN have been appointed to serve as directors of Wesley Woods United Methodist Camp and Retreat
Center near Indianola. Nancy (SHEPHERD) ALLEN grew up in Stuart. Art ALLEN is a native of Tingley and a graduate of Mount
Ayr Community high school.l
