Jim HIGHTSHOE and Barry WALLACE, members of the Kellerton Hustlers 4-H Club, were selected as the top junior
demonstration team in the county contest held Tuesday night of last week. Their demonstration of "Proper Lighting,"
which won for them a trip to the Saint Joseph Interstate Show, will be presented at the annual meeting of the
Rideta Electric Cooperative, In., on September 4. Their mothers served as coaches.
Bob REASONER was elected president of the Ellston Saddle Club during an organizational meeting held Sunday in the
park at Ellston. Other officers elected were Charles CASE, vice-president; Jenine JACKSON, secretary-treasurer; and
Myrle REASONER, director.
Kenneth MARKLEY of this city won first place honors and a $10 cash award in the horseshoe pitching contest held in
conjunction with the Ringgold County Fair. Clair WOOLLUMS and K. B. WILSON of Mount Ayr tied for second and third
places and each was awarded $6.25 in clase. Elmer REESE and Bill DAVIS of Diagonal share the fourth place prize
and each received two dollars. The contest, which attracted eight entries, was conducted by Kenneth CREVELING,
manager, John FAUST and Lyndon NICHOLS of Benton.
Mrs. Willis HOOD of this city has been elected director of education in the Children's Division of the Mental
Health Institute in Independence, the duties of which she assumed Monday.
Lynn FARIS exhibited Duroc hogs Friday and Saturday in the FFA division at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines. Lyle
is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur FARIS of Liberty township.
The Ringgold county 4-H livestock judging team will compete in the Iowa State Fair contest on Saturday, August 30.
Members who will be representing the county this year include Bill DAUGHTON and Raymond STANLEY of Kellerton, Jon
O'NEAL of Tingley and Gary WION of Beaconsfield. Other members who have worked out for the team this year include
Charles and Ed LONG of Shannon City and Leroy CREES of Beaconsfield.
Mount Ayr Community school district officials have been notified that the local high school is one of 117 in Iowa
to receive certain radio logical instruments free of charge from the Office of Defense and Civilian Mobilization.
The seven instruments will be used in the high school and adult science programs to detect and measure different types
of electronic radiation.
Three Ringgold county boys suffered severe injuries Tuesday night when the car in which they were riding overturned
and they were without medical attention for eight hours after the accident. The injured were John EVANS, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Roland EVANS of Mount Ayr, who suffered a broken left hip, Jerry COOPER, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy
COOPER of Monroe township, who sustained head injuries and lacerations, and Larry KIMBLE, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Frank KIMBLE of Mount Ayr, who suffered five fractured ribs and back injuries.
From the opening of the 31-bed hospital in April, 1951, to the present time, 6601 patients have been admitted to
the Ringgold County Hospital. The hospital trustees are J. T. NICHOLS, chairman; Leo SALTZMAN, secretary-treasurer;
John FAUST; Ora MILLER; Everett REYNOLDS; Clarence AUSTIN and Ray MARSH.
Joe PLACE is Mount Ayr's new golf champion, having won that title in the city tournament played Sunday on the local
course. Forty-three golfers participated. PLACE, with a score of 116 of 27 holes, edged Russ DAVENPORT by one point
to gain the title. It was the second championship for PLACE, who won the title in 1952. The defending champion, Royce
DAVIS, who play a poor second round, was third with a 121.
