The Rev. Jesse JACKSON was leading the junior and senior high school students of Ringgold county in a cross between a
responsive reading and a pep rally cheer. The Rev. JACKSON was challenging young America to "come alive" as he does
in schools three or four times a week across the county. But this time he was in Mount Ayr, talking to students
from Mount Ayr Community, Grand Valley and Diagonal high schools.
Ag Day in Mount Ayr Friday was celebrated in a
number of ways. Lee KLINE of Des Moines was the speaker at the annual MARC Ag Day observance Friday night. Ringgold
County Cattlewomen served more than 90 people with their annual Ag Day coffee featuring beef snacks.
Ringgold County Hospital administrator since June 30,
1986, Mike LANCTOT, resigned after an executive session of the hospital board last Wednesday night, March 18, at the
hospital. No indication was given as to the reason for the resignation.
Ringgold county farmers grew the second highest
amount of corn and third highest amount of soybeans when compared to surrounding counties in 1986, according to
statistics released this week by the Iowa Agricultural Statistics office in Des Moines. Ringgold county farmers
raised over seven million bushels of corn and two million bushels of soybeans during the 1986 season, the report
showed.
A Ringgold county resident has evidence that the celebration for the 75th birthday of girl scouting was
participated in by a group of girl scouts in Arizona. Kathy QUICK, who lives just south of Delphos, found a balloon
stuck in a tree on their farm Saturday morning , March 14, two days after it had been launched during the celebration
in Whitman, AZ.
Mount Ayr's newest business opened up this week in the former SMITH Jewelry building on North Taylor Street.
Video World will feature video tape and VCR rental at the new facility. Video World has another store facility in Lamoni.
The store opened for business Friday.
Patricia TAYLOR, daughter of Mr.and Mrs. Jack TAYLOR of Diagonal, has been selected
as a finalist for Iowa's seventh annual Homecoming Queen selection to be held April 4-5 at the Airport Hilton in Des
Moines. She is the Diagonal homecoming queen.
Some of the top bowlers in the junior bowling program in Mount Ayr
this year were Bill HIGHTSHOE, the top bowler in the league; Judd BOWEN, the top average among junior high bowlers,
and Susan BASTOW, Dee Dee STARK, Wayde SHOESMITH, Kevin CANNON and Ron SCHAFER -- the CANNON team -- won the
junior-senior high school league.
Ringgold county's first big winner in the Iowa Lottery was found this week when
Neil CHICKEN of Mount Ayr won $6,000 with a lottery ticket he purchased at Hy-Vee in Mount Ayr.
