Karen MADDEN, 17 years of age, of Diagonal, was crowned Miss Iowa Rural Electric during the annual convention of the Iowa Rural Electric Cooperative Association. Miss MADDEN was one of nine contestants entered in the beauty contest held in conjunction with the convention. She represented Ridea Electric Cooperative, Inc. of Mount Ayr. Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray MADDEN of Diagonal, Miss MADDEN is a Creston high school senior.

The winning entry in the out-of-town division of the Ridiculous Day's parade Saurday in Mount Ayr was entitled, "Touring U.S.A." The principals in the act are CAMPBELL Brothers (Bobby and Jerry), sons of Mr. and Mrs. Ira J. CAMPBELL and Miss America (Marla Kay Euritt) daughter of postmaster and Mrs. Marion EURITT.

A net gain of $546,000 of insurance in froce for the first seven months of 1958 was reported at the 71st annual meeting of the members of Ringgold Mutual Insurance Association held Saturday, Sept. 20. Officer of the association who were reelected were B. A. SALTZMAN, president; Leo D. GIBSON, vice-president; Carl F. PETERSEN, secretary, Beatrice PETERSEN, first assistant secretary and Howard SMITH, second assistant secretary.

Thomas J. MILLER, 70, and his wife, 68, of Blockton and Alex SALTZMAN, 68, of Mount Ayr, were killed Tuesday when the auto in which they were riding was struck broadside by a truck at the intersection of Highways 51 and 72 near Sauk Centre, MN. Mrs. SALTZMAN suffered a fractured arm and head cuts and late last night was transferred to the Ringgold county Hospital in Mount Ayr. Surviving the MILLERS are a son, Duane, of Blockton, and three daughters, Hazel Ruth (Mrs. Ray SMITH) of Des Moines, Ada Mae (Mrs. John MOON) of Blockton and Mary Elizabeth (Mrs. John OGLE) of Bedford.

Joe LINN, manager of the Hy-Vee store in Mount Ayr, is in a Princeton MO hospital recovering from injuries sustained Friday in an automobile accident that happened in New Mexico. Details of the accident are not available. At least two cars were involved and two persons were killed. Mr. LINN, who was returning from a vacation in Arizona, suffered head injuries. He was treated and released. After his return to the home of his mother in Princeton, MO, he became ill and entered the hospital there. Examination revealed that the was suffering from a fractured skull. Charles RICHARDS, of the local Hy-Vee store, talked by telephone Tuesday with Mr. LINN in the hospital. He reports that he is comfortable and is convalescing satisfactorily.

Four members of Ringgold county 4-H clubs have submitted their records in state competition this week at Ames. They are Shirley GOINS of Diagonal, Jeanine JACKSON of Ellston, Jim SMITH of Tingley and Leland RAUCH of Mount Ayr. Their entries will be in competition for state awards with 4-H club members from all counties in Iowa.

Kellerton advanced to the district tournament Thursday with a 20- shut out victory over Grand River in the finals of the sectional meet held at Kellerton. Kellerton's two runs were tallied by Junior WICKER and Glen PAYTON in the fifth and seventh innings. The team's hits totaled four. Bill PRIEST was the winning pitcher and Ernie SMITH was on the receiving end for the victors.

Wm. S. BRECKENRIDGE, well-known Tingley businessman, was one of 12 men who were appointed Saturday by the Iowa Commerce Commission to study problems pertinent to maintaining bus service throughout Iowa.
