Young women were the top scholars in both Ringgold county high schools when top academic honors were announced this week.
The students include Landi McFARLAND, Jolly MEESTER, Abby STEPHENS and Shauna KILGORE. McFARLAND, daughter of David and
Joy McFARLAND of Ellston, was valedictorian of the Mount Ayr Community high school class of 2002 and MEESTER, daughter
of Jay and Pat MEESTER of Mount Ayr, was salutatorian. At Diagonal Community high school, STEPHENS, daughter of John and
Karleen STEPHENS of Diagonal, was valedictorian and KILGORE, daughterof Larry and Melody KILGORE of Diagonal, was
salutatorian.
Mount Ayr Community high school graduate Peggy WHITSON will be traveling to the International Space Station for a
five-month stay at the end of this month.
Students ranking in the top 10 academically of the Mount Ayr Community high school class of 2002 include Mekenze BISHOP,
Kim LARSEN, Landi McFARLAND, Holly MEESTER, Amber SHIELDS, Melanie JACKSON, Sean KILGORE, Nick JOHNSON, Kyle FORD and
Kelsey ALLEN.
Dekko Award for Teaching Excellence was presented to two Ringgold county teachers at ceremonies
this past week. Mount Ayr Community high school band instructor Greg STORHOFF was nominated by Landi McFARLAND and Sue
MOBLEY was nominated by Abby STEPHENS for the award in the Diagonal district.
For the first time since 1992 and the second time ever, a Mount Ayr Community high school golf squad is headed to the
state tournament. Members of the team include Tanner RINEHART, Drew YODER, Nick JOHNSON, Ryan ROE, T. J. REDDING and
Justin REDDING.
Honored by the Mount Ayr Community Athletic Boosters at the athletic awards night were Merritt and Lorene TRIGGS for
their support of the athletic programs over the years.
