There were no major injuries in an accident on Highway 2 at the intersection with Hayes Street Monday afternoon in
a close call for driver Aleha SHIELDS of Mount Ayr. The 1981 Oldsmobile driven by SHIELDS was totaled with a $2,500
loss when the front of the car was hit and demolished by a 1979 Kenworthy semi hauling concrete culverts on a flatbed
about 3:45 p.m. The semi, driven by Bernard LEAR of Nevada, was headed east on Highway 2.
Eight Mount Ayr Community high school Raiderettes qualified to participate in the state track meet in Des Moines Friday
and Saturday at the district meet here last Tuesday. Qualifying to participate were Laura JONES, Amanda WERNER, Melissa
EIGHMY, Rachel DERSCHEID, Jennifer NELSON, Debbie STEPHENS, Jerica JACKSON and Micki STRAIGHT.
Two Mount Ayr Community high school students share the award as the two fine arts seniors of the year at the fine arts
banquet held Saturday night at the school. The award is presented for participation in music, drama and art during the
student's high school career. This year's winners were Erica PETERSOHN and Joe HYNEK.
Two Mount Ayr Community high school seniors were among over 1,700 students recently recognized as State of Iowa scholars
by the Iowa College Student Aid Commission, a state organization which administers the annual scholarship. Ringgold county
students named to the honor were Jennifer NEWTON of Mount Ayr and Cameron ADAMS of rural Kellerton, both seniors at
Mount Ayr Community high school.
Dr. Dan STEELE of Cedar Falls has been awarded the Iowa Dental Association's distinguised service award. The award, given
for only the 16th time in the association's 135-year history, was presented at the Iowa Dental Association's annual
meeting in Des Moines recently. STEELE is the son of Gladys STEELE CARR of Mount Ayr and the late Hugh STEELE. He is
a 1956 graduate of Mount Ayr Community high school.
Raiderette Jennifer NELSON won the 1500 meter run during the district Class 1A girls track meet held here Tuesday
night with the time of 5:18.3 to qualify for a the state track meet in Des Moines. NELSON also helped the 4x800 meter relay
to a victory to qualify for the trip to state.
